Acquisition's effect on an in-house position

I am currently interviewing for an in-house opportunity with a large company that is set to be acquired by a much larger company in 2019. The position is truly a dream job for me, but I am concerned that the 2019 restructuring could pose job security issues, particularly since I would be such a new employee. Should an upcoming acquisition always be a red flag for a potential hire? Also, any advice as to how to address this concern in an interview? Thanks.

No one can answer this better than those that you'll be interviewing with, and this is a totally acceptable and good question to ask in your interviews. I would say that without knowing more, you have every right to be concerned - mergers and acquisitions almost always come with eventual layoffs to eliminate redundant employees after the two companies have joined.

If you're truly going to "large" company, I wouldn't be very concerned. Do you know more details about the acquisition? Is the larger company acquiring your company going into integrate the target into its current operations, or would your company (i.e., the target) be a standalone business unit of the larger company? Either way as you point out, it could be a concern, but I'd be less concerned if it was the latter.
