Break before lateraling
I got an offer to join another biglaw firm in a city 200 miles away. My current firm pays bonuses mid Feb. With a two-week notice, this means the earliest I can start is March 4. Is it okay to ask for the start date to be moved up a week or two to mid-March to give me more time to move? The firm said they prefer a start date that is as early as possible (but understand the need to collect a bonus). I wonder what the etiquette is for negotiating a later start date to give myself some breathing room.

Totally normal. Just tell them you need the buffer to move. Even if they're paying for moving, no one expects you to start immediately.
