I contacted DHS yesterday to notify them I had received offers from the IRS and to check on the status of my application. I was told that all those selected for second round interviews have already been contacted.

Well the e-mail is being relayed between your interviewers and the hiring panel. So it's feasible that there could be a delay if your interviewers are out of the office or something...

In my phone interview with DOL a couple of weeks ago, I was told I would hear something in the beginning of December. Also, they didnt exactly ask to rate my preferences but did ask if I preferred a regional or national position.

At this point, some reference checks have been conducted but not all.

Does HUD conduct reference checks for all candidates or just the ones who have a chance of moving forward?

Do you know how many will be selected? The brochure says 10-20, but it seems that historically it has been closer to 10 and less.

And how soon after an interview should references be checked?

I would assume that 10 to 20 is correct. I know the last time we had a legal honors class, it was, as you say, closer to 10. But several of the years before that, the number was closer to 16-17. We actually remarked on how few there were that most recent year. With the amount of attrition and retirements we've had the last year or two however, I would guess it would be more rather than fewer. No way to be sure though.

And references should be checked very quickly: some have been already. Since it's a holiday week, there may well be some lag time. But next week ought to be the absolute latest.

Are reference checks done by interviewing field offices or headquarters?

At HUD they're done by the people who interviewed you: regardless of which office they're from.

DOL: Are the active consideration emails done in batches? If we don't receive one this week, is it unlikely to receive one next week (last week of November)?

For DOL, I received the active consideration last year and request for preference. Do you know how many of these emails went out by any chance? I don't want to get excited for nothing. :/

Anyone know if final selections have been made from second round interviews? The website says final round interviews will be in November and December, but also says successful applicants will be notified Nov. 15. Maybe a typo, i.e. they meant Dec. 15?

DOL:

From scanning the thread from last year, it appears that the "consideration/preferences" emails people received two(ish) weeks ago might be followed by a request for references for finalists either next week or the following week. A few days after that, offers go will go out, possibly by phone. If they're slow this year, it could wind up taking until January, but it seems like they started earlier this year, so that might not be the case.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
