2L Government jobs that lead to full time?

Post by littlekidlover » Fri Aug 17, 2018 10:21 am

Rising 2L, T20. I'm interested in what public-sector positions I could potentially obtain for next summer that would offer at least a strong chance of staying on long term. I understand DOJ SLIP will increase your chances in the Honor's Program and most NYCLD 2Ls get offers. Are there other positions like this? Open to fed/state/city.

Thanks in advance! I know there probably aren't too many positions like this.

USGAO often hires their interns full-time. Same with the Senate and House OLC - but all of those are extremely difficult to get since it's about 3-5 interns per office.

Federal Reserve and IRS both have the authority to make offers to 2L summers if you're interested in banking/tax. Not guaranteed but I've heard it is fairly common.

The SEC will NOT offer 2L summers at the end of the internship period.

I would strongly recommend pursuing internship opportunities at an office in the same city/area that your school is located, and stay there for as long as you can (summer, fall, and spring), and make it known you're interested in full time employment. There is no guarantee this will work but public sector offices tend to be overwhelmed with work and need motivated people to shoulder some of that load. If you can make yourself an asset for a long enough period of time, they'll be motivated to put in the effort to get you in. Fwiw this is what I did and it worked.

The vast majority of government agencies do not. PBGC usually gives offers to most of their 2L paid interns if the budget allows for it.
