Cornell 2018 AJF

This is where you can discuss all things related to the job hunt: bidding, number of screener interviews, success with mass mailing, etc. This also includes discussion of pre-OCI interviews since they have become much more common. Use the anon feature if you want to discuss sensitive information (such as your own GPA range) without having anybody figure out who you are from your regular username. Elder Cornellians will (hopefully) check in to give advice. You can post your bidlists here and receive feedback, or you can PM those who volunteer to review them. Pros of posting them publicly are that anyone can jump in and help + respond to each other; cons are that there's a chance other students may steal your ideas or arrange their bid list if they see trends in how firms are being ranked. That's up to you. But whatever you do, I highly recommend that you run your bidlist by someone who has been through AJF recently and not to rely solely on career services.

When AJF begins, you can use the anon feature to report any callbacks, offers and rejections you get so that other neurotic folks can know what to expect and freak out accordingly. And when you report a CB, note that including the initials of the screener you had can be helpful; different screeners for the same firm may make decisions at different times.

All firms participating in AJF are listed below with the offices they are interviewing for in parenthesis. There are some repeats with firms to indicate that there are more than one ranking slot for these firms. Typically firms that have separate interview slots (i.e. Latham) have separate recruiters for those offices and typically lead to better outcomes than firms that are listed with several cities but only one slot (i.e. Foley Lardner) because the recruiters that come tend to be from the NY office in these cases and have less influence in other offices.

Cornell alum, V10 law firm, looked over plenty of bidlists over the years. If you would like a second opinion or some advice, feel free to shoot me a PM; confidentiality guaranteed. I know how stressful these times can be, and can be hard to talk to even your closest friends about this.

Do include most recent firm GPA information provided by career services, your preliminary bidlist, and # of interview slots. Your GPA, background, target market, how you feel about interviews, background and particular work experience, etc might be helpful.

Make sure you reach out to your mentors before submitting a bid list. AJF is a tremendous opportunity, and you'll want to maximize all that it has to offer.

Not sure how helpful this is since bids are due in 30 min I believe, but Friday will definitely be your biggest day since a lot of those firms are moderate to flexible. If you're feeling desperate consider bidding Jones Day, Greenberg Traurig, and Reed Smith because they may not receive as many bids this year. As for other days, look at Baker Botts, Foley, Cadwalader, Seward & Kissel, Hunton & Williams, Cooley, Fox Rothschild, Linklaters, and Winston Strawn. Also, I've heard that the Delaware market can be a great place to bid because they are less selective. If you're willing to live in Delaware for a bit it could be a great option for you

I would like to pick up more interviews if I can, but I'm not too hopeful any standard slots will be available so I'm shooting for some outside of the schedule.

I would imagine Christina Price is the person to contact. I feel like that is the exact type of situation where they would let you cancel and free up the spot for other people in the class.

If you want more screeners, I would highly recommend mass mailing the firms that you didn't get a screener for ASAP. This is a great way to slide into early pre-AFJ interviews, if you spin it right. Especially if you know someone currently summering or working there to talk to recruitment for you. A lot of firms have started early interviews and career services doesn't really advertise it. It worked for me and quite a few other folks my year.

I have a question. Does the person who will conduct the screener have the ultimate authority to decide who to give a CB. Or is he/she just there collecting resume and transcript and then sending these materials to those who will make the decisions. If it is the latter, what is the point of having a 20-min talk?

It depends on th firm and the interviewer as to whether they have the authority to give you a callback directly. They most certainly are not just collecting resumes either way, as your interview answers and demeanor will be the persuasive thing that they are picking up.

most top 20/25 firms for NYC weren't available with open spots.

There were still some great DC options left like W&C but not the best NY options
