Very interested in responses here.

Also want to add another question: as a rising 2L who ultimately wants to do plaintiff-side work as a career, what would be the best route to that point if I can’t secure an SA/full time position with a reputable plaintiffs firm? Would general biglaw lit be the best choice?

I think the pinnacle for plaintiff's work is Susman-Godfrey, but I'm not sure about the other options.

Plaintiff's work covers a broad range from securities, antitrust, consumer, product liability (which can then further be broken down into subspecialties like asbestos, tobacco, or pharma), to IP/patent. Check Chambers or some of the trade publications for a full-list, but some of the best ones I've heard of are: Bernstein Litowitz (securities), Labaton, Lieff, Robbins Geller, Robins Kaplan (securities/antitrust), Cohen Milstein (consumer), Susman, Hausfeld (antitrust). There also biglaw firms that do a lot of litigation on behalf of institutional investors that is considered more respectable than representing people off the street, like Boies (does a mix but often reps institutional investors or antitrust plaintiffs), Holwell Shuster, I'd even throw Quinn in that group. And of course every city will have some med mal/personal injury firms that are considered the top line and get all the most profitable cases.

Harvard's Private Public Interest & Plaintiffs' Firms Guide -- https://hls.harvard.edu/content/uploads ... -guide.pdf -- leans more toward firms dedicated to public interest causes (consumer, antitrust, labor & employment, environmental, civil rights etc.), but is a helpful resource for that end of the plaintiffs' firm spectrum.

What practice areas are you interested and what geographic location? Unlike biglaw (which is seemingly not even the case these days), many solid plaintiffs firms have 1 or a few offices and specialize in 1 or a few practice areas. So for example, if you wanted to do securities work in Pennsylvania, you’re looking at Kessler topaz. If Boston, you’re looking at block Leviton. If you’re looking in nyc you’re looking at blbg or Labaton, or pomerantz or kfk. if you’re in California you’re looking at Robbins Geller. In dc it’s Cohen milstein. And so on. If you’re portable location wise you’ll have more options, but it’s still a good idea to narrow down practice areas as many of these firms will have you specialize early.

What are hours like at the top securities firms like Labaton or Robbins Geller? What would a mid/sr level associate make as a base (ballpark)? What range would bonuses fall in over, say, a 5 yr period (understanding it’s very variable)?
