Re: Northwestern OCI 2018
For the sake of posterity, I'll add on to what the other anon poster who ran through his/her bids/CBs wrote.
About me: 3.3 GPA, K-JD, Real Estate law interest (and can speak passionately about)
Advice:
(1) Be realistic when it comes to median GPAs. Put 3-4 reaches (more than 0.2 above your GPA) and make the rest of your bids fall below that reach threshold. The highest median GPA on my list was 3.68, which I oddly enough received a CB from out of extraordinary luck and synergy with the interviewer. My next highest was 3.62. My third highest was 3.58. Basically every bid median GPA after that was ~3.5 or below. Going in, I considered all of the ~3.6 GPA firms to be reach firms, and I knew any bid in the 3.6+ territory was basically a throwaway but was OK if I could rationalize the bid (one was in my home market, another was a firm I really wanted, and the last one I knew I could put very low in my bid list - meaning I wouldn't jeopardize any other bids - and still get). Any more reach firms that than could seriously have jeopardized my success. As much as I wanted some of those juicy V10s, the V50s in my range paid just as much.
(2) Understand that Chicago bidding (especially lit) isn't far off from chiraq. For example, I know someone with a 3.8 that struck out of Chicago lit. The Chicago firm median GPAs skew quite high. Even the lowest median GPA national firms in Chicago are in the 3.5-3.6 territory. This means that if you have a weaker GPA, you really need to look elsewhere. A 3.3 is going to be tough to sell in Chicago, even with ties, the NU name, and a transactional focus. Chicago was my preferred market, but you would have never known it by looking at my bid list (4 of my top 20 were Chicago firms). That's how it should be if you want a reasonable chance of landing a job. You can always network your ass off as a 2L/3L to land back in Chicago post-graduation.
(3) Understand that Chicago bidding is a "bid high or bust" game. If you want Chicago firms, most of them will go in the top 10. What does that mean exactly? Most Chicago firm bids will be wasted outside of the top 10. You won't get the screener, and you'll have given up a perfectly good opportunity to interview with a great NYC/LA/DC/secondary market firm. I know people who just submitted lists of 25 Chicago firms. Surprise surprise, they got like 12 screeners. Combined with Chicago's savage GPA median's, I knew a couple that struck out and one that is sitting on only 1 CB right now. As a low GPA applicant, I recommend bidding 3-5 Chicago firms you really like in their proper places and then moving on to New York firms up to 20-25. After that point, your have pretty much no chance of snagging a NY firm, and you should move to regional markets (I interviewed with one fantastic regional firm that had 20 spots and only 5 people were interviewing because nobody bid them).
(4) Know that bids 31-40 are going to be "networking bids." You aren't going to get any firm in that range unless it's a firm with like a 3.8 GPA median (scaring people off) in a secondary or non-NU-targeted primary market (e.g. DC, Portland). Bid firms you care about and fall in your GPA range but you know that you can't fit into your bid list without losing another better opportunity/GPA match bid. Then, you can inform the employers that you bid them but got unlucky and really really would love to interview with them. You might snag a couple screeners that way.
Results:
23 of 40 bids (median was 16, 75th percentile was 18)
10 of my top 10
14 of my top 15
17 of my top 20
I grabbed 6 screeners from the 21-40 range.
Additionally, + 3 from open signups = 26 total screeners.
Results: 5 CBs (although there are still 5 firms that I haven't heard back from that are in the slower secondary markets and could result in CBs (got a secondary market CB today in fact))
