Should I disclose 3.4 undergrad GPA from HYS on resume?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Apr 23, 2018 5:01 pm

Pretty straightforward question: I have a 3.4 undergrad GPA from HYS in a classical but "useless" liberal arts major (think English or History). Is this too low to be disclosed on resume? Don't think it really helps me to disclose, but also don't want employers to think I flunked.

I am an H student. I read on their career services page to exclude undergrad GPA (rationale that it unnecessarily raises question why it wasn't a 4.0).

I wouldn’t ever put my GPA on a resume unless it was a 4.0. If you have honors you could put that. If not, don’t mention it.

If they want to know your grades, they will ask for a transcript.

Are you a law student (and, if so, 1L? 2L?)? As a general rule, I'd probably suggest leaving anything under 3.8-3.9 off of a resume, and I'd probably suggest leaving even a >3.9 GPA off of your resume after graduation (definitely if you're looking for your second post-ls job).

I'm a third-year in biglaw. I figured it was stupid to put it on there for lateraling purposes, but thanks for the confirmation.

Wait- so completely keep GPA, both law school and undergrad, off resumes when applying for jobs as a lateral too?

I'm sorry -- I wrote the above post re keeping GPAs off of resumes and I should have been clearer: I was just referring to undergrad GPA. I would list a law school GPA that is sub- 3.8 for many jobs, even post-graduation, and I would keep law school GPA or class rank on your resume for several years after graduation, assuming it's strong.

I still keep my undergrad GPA because this boomer partner once told me that since I didn't include it, he thought it was bad. My GPA is around yours OP. I'm 3 years out of law school.
