Bill the most is a bit different from most insane hours. A firm like WLRK has an essentially endless amount of work that allows associates to bill for just about every minute on the office. Other firms may result in far fewer billables but have associate working crazy hours with a decent amount of just waiting for the work to come in.

In terms of most work hours, I think v5 M&A groups are likely at the top.

M&A groups are the busiest. But what's V5? You mean V6

Is that what they are calling it these days? Not necessarily referring to specific firms, but the very top M&A practices that are getting the biggest and most labor intensive deals.

But you are correct. I'm not aware of any engine configured as a v5. It's either a v6 or a inline 5. The inline 5 in the Audi TTRS is pretty cool  However, all the cool kids have twin turbo v8s these days.

For M&A (and transactional work more generally), WLRK has a well-earned reputation for having the most insane hours. The rest of the NYC V5/V10 are also very intense, with Cravath probably being a notch worse than the rest.

For litigation, it can vary significantly even within firms, but WLRK, Cravath, QE, Boies, and certain litigation boutiques have a reputation for being places with especially crazy hours.

I can tell you that as a paralegal (well, legal asst) at Cravath, I billed 2600 and 2700 hours in my two years there. I was in M&A my first year and cap mkts my second. I was very tired afterward. Then I went to grad school.

I worked on Thanksgiving. I worked after going to the emergency room. I did a lot of all nighters. A lot of all nighters.
