Giving Notice (Bad Terms) - Lateral Hire

I'm leaving my firm (non-NYC) after 1.5 years to go to a peer firm (non-NYC) and have had a less than stellar relationship with one of the senior partners. While my new firm stated my offer is conditioned on good references, they have not requested any said references on me.

Three questions:
(1) Should I let the partner that does not like me know that I am leaving?
(2) Should I let them know where I am leaving to?
(3) Do firms always check references?

i wouldn't tell the partner you're leaving if you aren't leaving yet... If your offer is contingent on references, don't tell him until those references check out.

Easy fix. Don't list the partner that hates you as a reference.

You don’t say that you are leaving until you leave….good terms or otherwise. Anecdotal, they [normally] do not check references with your current firm….but they may check after you leave (strangely enough they did in my case).

don't say anything. the new firm won't talk to your senior partner, and if they do, they won't care what he says because hes biased.

just ride out the process and give notice once conflicts clear.

Don't give references from your current employer and certainly not the Senior Partner you dislike.
