Detroit Legal Market

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Feb 10, 2018 12:38 pm

Looking to learn more about the Detroit legal market. For example, what is "market" pay for first-years? What are considered the best firms? (I'm assuming Foley, Jones Day and Honigman), what is required to break into those firms? Etc... just general info from those who practice in the area

There is no "market pay" in Detroit.
Jones Day/Foley pays $160.
Honigman pays $150.
Bodman/DW pays $110.

If you are at an out of state school, have ties and are competitive for biglaw generally, you will be competitive in Detroit. For in state schools, I think top 10%-15% is required (aside from Michigan).

This is pretty spot on. Of course these are starting salaries. Different firms rise at different rates.

Top 10-15% noted above is pretty reasonable too. Top 10% + LR will give you the pick of the litter. Top 15% no LR will fine if you have good interview skills.

Also, patent law has a huge market in Detroit with little supply of patent attorneys. So, patent attorneys will probably have a decent shot at the Detroit "big law" firms if they're in the top half of their class.
