1L Intellectual Property Internship

Post by plutarchy » Mon Jan 15, 2018 6:39 pm

I know it's late in the game, but I just got my Fall grades back and I did better than I expected (~3.8) at a T1.
I was wondering if anyone has advice for applying to IP firms as a 1L. I only could find a handful online to which I could apply and my school's website isn't helpful (but I might just be having difficulty navigating it).
Thanks

Go to a lot of firm websites and submit a cover letter and resume? This isn't rocket surgery.

What is your undergrad degree in? I ask because most IP groups want to hire patent-eligible students. Depending on your background, your marketability will increase/decrease at the 1L stage. Also, do you have any geographical preferences?

There are way more than a handful of IP firms that hire 1Ls. The best list is found below (click on the 2017 employers link):

https://www.luc.edu/law/career/patent.html

The next best IP job fair is in Atlanta. You can view the previous participating employers on this page:

http://sipjf.law.gsu.edu/participants/i ... -students/

Both of these IP job fairs are open to students from all over the country. If you're interested in participating, check in with your career services office. They may cover your registration fees.

Double check on NALP to determine whether specific firms hire 1L. You can use Vault, Chamber and Partners, Chambers Associate, Above the Law, and Top Law Schools to figure out the pecking order based on reputation, practice area, location.
