The above poster has it right. You ask for flexibility. I'm telling you, you will be left holding the bag if you hold out for hearing back from firms.

The firms wait to say much of anything, even while they interview candidates. And they can wait an awful long time. If you're holding out through February, you should realize your chances are diminishing each day. I would find out about peers getting 1L SAs in January and February, and then one or two months later I would get a rejection letter.

You're better off having applied to something else you still want, and if you are in the situation where you are going to back out of your existing commitment for a 1L SA, you're better off than if you waited and had nothing.
I can't exactly accept a RA position with a prof or a spot in a clinic and then back out of it, don't think my school would be too happy about that.

Then pick other external opportunities so you're not burning bridges at school. There are plenty of other organizations and government agencies you could apply to who are more flexible and where the consequences of having to back out aren't as awkward, and some of them would probably be better than an RA or clinic role, depending on your interests.

I'm not saying people are going to be happy with you - I'm telling you that's a risk you have to take. And frankly, the risk of you having to back out of another job for an SA is low, because the chance of getting a 1L SA is low. That's why I'm doling out this bit of unsolicited advice. I'm suggesting you have the calculus backwards and you're convincing yourself you are likely to get one of these golden tickets.

Original anon -- it was a "sorry we have too many exceptional candidates" e-mail. This was after submitting a strong first semester transcript. I wonder why I didn't get dinged from the get go.

Firms might not let you (mine didn't) work another job while employed. I'd clarify.

Is it pretty common for firms not to respond to e-mails about our grades? Even some firms I have already interviewed with have not responded to me sending them my grades.

NALP says they expect to take 14 1L Scholars. Other offices have roughly 25% CB->Offer rate so I'm gonna guess somewhere between 50-75 CBs.

This is wrong. At the interview the lady said 12 offers and more if they really cannot choose.

I thought that was 14 for the whole program nationwide? 14 for New York only sounds really high...

50-75 interviews in one week for these 3-4 hour slots also sound a bit implausible.

I'm saying this purely from my observation and no actual information btw.

No, 14 for NYC. You can look at their nalp stats too. Also the recruiter verbatim told me 12 for nyc "but last year we couldn't narrow it down to 14, so we chose 12"

Just found a Cooley ding in my spam folder dated 1/8 so that was fun. That was before I had a chance to send first term grades as well. It was for their patent summer program.

Is there any guide on what callbacks are like? Are they a mix of partners and associates? What's the timeline for getting back to you post callback? How long is the norm of them lasting? Etc. I have a callback next week, my career office is tough to find time with, and a google search isn't really cutting it. Thank you!

My personal experience with 1L callbacks (FWIW, all of them have been straight to callback without a screener. My impression is that some of them treated the 1L receptions as screeners, though):

My general experience:
1.5-2 hours long with 3 interviews of 30-40 minutes.
Each interview had a partner and an associate.
Met with the recruiter for about 10 minutes pre-interview.

At two firms, I had 4 interviews, 2 with individuals, 2 with two people. Add in the time I met with the recruiter at the beginning and it was about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
