Re: 2018 Texas 1L SA Thread
It depends. Some receptions bring out large crowds, and when I was a 1L I went to plenty where it was kind of a waste going other than free food (I was a 1L SA and will be a 2L SA next summer). It’s just a networking tool. You still have to go through the normal recruiting process. They are not going to hire you because you went to the reception unless you have everything else they are looking for as far as grades, fit, personality and overall ability to conduct yourself as a professional. Imagine a firm only hiring students that go to their receptions. Bad press and not happening.Anonymous User wrote:About how many 1Ls usually go to these receptions? 50+? It seems like virtually everyone who applies gets an invitation to the reception.ausimpv wrote:No. Going doesn’t mean you’ll be hired either. offer to invite. the receptions are a separate deal.

What is an offer to invite? I'm not quite sure what that means.GorillaWarfare wrote:Roy McAvoy wrote:By “offer to invite” are you referring to invited to an interview or a holiday reception? Mid-level here at one of the firms throwing one of these shindigs. I would say definitely try making these and making a good impression. We've typically extended multiple callbacks based on the people we liked at the reception. Obviously your first semester grades will play a huge factor, but I wouldn't say it's a 'waste' to go to these.
Just my two cents.

Just to get some more opinions in here, would your firm dislike it if a 1L dropped in for 30-45 minutes instead of staying for the entire event? With at least four firms having receptions on the same night, that's something a lot of us are considering I think.spacepenguin wrote:Mid-level here at one of the firms throwing one of these shindigs. A poster above said it's normal to just drop in and drop out, and that seems to be the consensus, but I'm curious if that would apply to your firm as well.

Definitely OK to just drop in for 30-45 minutes. Try making a significant connection with 1 or 2 people and you should be set. Firms completely understand that there's a million receptions going on at the same time, so no one is expecting you to stick around the whole time.

2 calls so far to schedule interviews (PM me if you wanna know the firms) - seems like they're more of a callback structure? Both stated there'd be several rounds of interviews + lunch. I'm also flying in but didn't ask about reimbursements or anything

Dallas or Houston? I've heard of at least one Houston firm setting up interviews already, but haven't seen any Dallas movement yet.addie1412 wrote:2 calls so far to schedule interviews (PM me if you wanna know the firms) - seems like they're more of a callback structure? Hey addie, congrats on your interview offers! I'm also a 1L and I was just wondering when you scheduled the interviews for, since I'm struggling to decide when to schedule mine. The holidays are coming up fast, so did you squeeze your interviews in for next week? Or are you waiting until after the hols?addie1412 wrote:2 calls so far to schedule interviews (PM me if you wanna know the firms) - seems like they're more of a callback structure? Grades are starting to roll in at my school. Is it best to update firms with grades as they come in, or wait until they're all back?
I'm in a situation where it's very possible I'll have every grade but one before Christmas, and that professor is notorious for not putting grades in until late January.

Can we get a running list of firms that have started to send interview invites out? I can confirm the following:
