Yeah sorry I misunderstood and I was talking about the second. I think if it's something you've already told friends/family about or announced on Facebook or whatever then it's fine to tell the firm and I definitely wouldn't wait until the last minute.

Umm, based on my experience in a big firm - the policy isn't going to be the most important thing here. It's the Partners you work with most. Do outstanding work while you're there so they miss you, build a good relationship with them if possible, make sure they know in advance by at least several months (and remind them several times leading up), and be professional. If it's cool with them, you'll be good. Certainly do propose as much time as you think you need/want for this, but I would highly advise against arguing the technicalities of firm policy with the Partners you work under.
