How much notice should I give when resigning? Forum

I work at the DA's office and have been here for about a year. I have an offer from a law firm and am moving to a law firm. I plan on giving 2 weeks notice, but I can see why my job may want more, given it's a government job and has certain beaucracies in finding a replacement, if they do. However it would make it awkward to be there longer than I need to be.

Here are my two cents. Check with your new employer to see if they have a preference as to when you start. I believe most places are fine with you starting 3-4 weeks after you accept the offer.

Then, for your current employer, say that you want to make your transition out as smooth as possible. Thus, promise that you will stay on for another two weeks (say this when you resign), and then offer to stay for an additional week if that is necessary (again, say this when you resign).

I firmly believe that the first and last impression you give are very important in maintaining professional relationships. If you're known as being extremely professional and classy when you resign, it can only help your career.

OP here. The reality is I don't see myself needing any references for letters of recommendation for them in the future, as crass as that sounds. I am also worried that if I do give my notice early, they will tell me to leave the next day. And then have animosity from the office for another week. DA's are pretty gunhoe about their job and would likely look at me in disdain for jumping on the civil ship.

I personally think two weeks notice is short for legal profession. I provided 4 weeks (my later job was flexible on start date; obviously would not apply if you have to start in a shorter time).
