Re: 3L OCI 2017
Hey guys I'm someone who will be doing the 3L OCI 2018 and I understand there is a great amount of difficulty and some would say next to impossible.
That being said people who have been successful this year (those who got offers and also those of you who got callbacks) would you mind sharing your story a little bit?
Perhaps factors such as which law school (vague ranking such as t10, t20 etc is fine), your GPA (if you don't mind or a range if you prefer), and perhaps why you believe you didn't get it through 2L OCI?
I'm not seeking to shame or make anyone feel bad I just want stories to have an idea of "those who made it why were they originally there and how did they do it"
Thank you guys for your time

Not directly responsive, but I'm a first-year who just started after not having a 2L SA and I got hired in January of 3L. I think for me, the most important thing was narrowly-tailoring my resume/cover letter for my practice area of interest. You have to realize that it's a different ballgame than 2L and some luck definitely comes into play, but for 2L SAs firms are hiring for basically everything so they care much less. In 3L, firms are hiring for specific practice areas and you have to come across as the best candidate for that group. You want your resume to scream dedication to that practice area if you want to have any success at all. Networking also plays a much more sizeable role as a 3L and certainly helped me.Anonymous User wrote:Hey guys I'm someone who will be doing the 3L OCI 2018 and I understand there is a great amount of difficulty and some would say next to impossible.

I went to a T20 and finished top third, but when I was interviewing for 2L I was between median and top third. I do think that played a factor in my not getting hired out of the gate, but my GPA/school combo when I was ultimately hired wasn't exactly top of the ladder either compared to some here.
I don't want to out myself, but if anyone wants more info on how it worked out for me I can PM.

Can you tell us where in the vault rankings you landed (just to see if it's the larger firms that are willing to hire 3L's)? Also, did you massmail or did you send your application materials to firms that posted on symplicity or that you knew had openings? Finally, did you have a prestigious 2L summer internship, or just a legal related work experience? Thanks, and glad it worked out for you.Anonymous User wrote:Not directly responsive, but I'm a first-year who just started after not having a 2L SA and I got hired in January of 3L. I would prefer to not out myself, as my story would be very obviously identifying to anyone at my firm. For that reason, if interested, just quote this post with your user and I can PM you to elaborateAnonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:Not directly responsive, but I'm a first-year who just started after not having a 2L SA and I got hired in January of 3L. This firm is more of a specialty shop focusing on my practice area (I don't want to say boutique, as we are upward of 250 attorneys), so not vault ranked but very highly regarded on Chambers and market-paying. I got the position by mass mailing. They were advertising an opening for a mid-level associate and I just took my shot and applied and they decided they would prefer to hire me for the next year instead.Anonymous User wrote:Can you tell us where in the vault rankings you landed (just to see if it's the larger firms that are willing to hire 3L's)? Nothing prestigious 2L summer, I was at a regional midsize firm doing mostly uninteresting and uninspiring work in a completely different market (where I went to school).

I'm not seeking to shame or make anyone feel bad I just want stories to have an idea of "those who made it why were they originally there and how did they do it"
Thank you guys for your time
I went to a T20 and finished top third, but when I was interviewing for 2L I was between median and top third. I do think that played a factor in my not getting hired out of the gate, but my GPA/school combo when I was ultimately hired wasn't exactly top of the ladder either compared to some here.
I don't want to out myself, but if anyone wants more info on how it worked out for me I can PM.
Nothing prestigious 2L summer, I was at a regional midsize firm doing mostly uninteresting and uninspiring work in a completely different market (where I went to school).
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
