1) Agree with the above, always have a back up plan. The earliest job offers weren't made until November.
2) The program is very selective. I did not do big law my 2L summer, but I did DOJ Internship. Otherwise, I was law review, top of class, trial team, etc. I also didn't graduate from a top law school, so it was expected I had to be exceptional to get an offer.
3) Definitely be expected to explain why the government if you only have private work on your resume. They'll also gauge your ability to work on cases you might be morally opposed to, or cases you don't otherwise agree with.

Anyone know if the cancellation of federal raise affects honors attorneys?

You're paid on the GS-scale, so yes. Whatever GS-11 (or the appropriate level for your experience) is at the time you enter is what you'll be paid.
