Schulte, FF, cadwalader, Milbank? you're filling it up high for little reason. Find the top 10-15 M&Ain NYC

Also, with your grades, you should be doing pre-eip interviews: email your target firms directly and try and get an offer early. Your eip should be very chill. no need to fill it up for no reason. Of this top 5 you listed, with kent, you should be able to lock down at least 3.

General pre-EIP interview question: any offers acquired during pre-EIP interviews only stay open for 28 days, per NALP. Doesn't this put students in danger of having such offers expire before getting anything out of EIP? Are firms generally okay with granting extensions on pre-EIP offers when students want to go through the EIP process before deciding?

All my pre-OCI offers granted an automatic extension of the NALP deadline by tolling the start date to the first day of EIP. So it was 28 days after Aug 4 or whatever the first day was. This only become a problem with one firm that takes weeks to make decisions, and in early september I worked that out with individual several day extensions for the last few firms I was interested in

1 Boies Schiller Flexner (FFB: 1)

25. Susman Godfrey (FFB: X)
Off the top of my head, you should add WilmerHale (DC), Hogan Lovells (DC), Sidley (DC), Kirkland (DC), Jones Day (DC) (if you can deal with conservatives), Jenner (DC). There's someone earlier on the thread who posted a pretty good DC lit bid list. Scope that out.

Is there a reason you don't have Simpson, Latham, Kirkland, or Cleary on here?
Agreed with these additions except that Jenner doesn't do DC interviews at EIP and their summer program is extremely selective, but it's still worth applying online. Also, you'll need an explanation for why DC, but that's true for anyone thinking seriously about DC.

I'm pretty sure this isn't right. All my pre-EIP offers lasted weeks after EIP.

You have 28 days after the first day of EIP for offers received prior to EIP. For offers received after or during EIP, you have 28 days from the offer (although employers can retract an offer after 14 days if they ask you to reaffirm and you do not). http://www.nalp.org/fulltextofnalpprinc ... dstandards

There's a good chance that you can't bid multiple offices for most of those firms (I know you can't for Gibson). So you're going to have to get rid of duplicates. Many of them will let you split within the firm though, especially if you get an offer in a satellite office and want to split with New York.

Also, tip to everyone: I have a feeling Kirkland is going to make a big jump this year. It was #1 two years ago. So if you want to get it, I'd move it into at least the top 20.

Yea, that's tight. Yea, it's possible to email them either way, especially a firm that is on the less selective side, like Milbank. Email any firm you're interested in, whether you get to bid or not. Saying something more neutral like "I wasn't able to get a screeber with you through the bidding process, but would be interested in the firm." Maybe others here can give some consensus on that, or OCS can advise.
Not OP, but to be clear: we should be e-mailing firms we're interested in but don't get through bidding after interview schedules come out and asking them for an interview at EIP? Or outside of EIP? Any upside to just e-mailing them now instead of waiting until the 25th or whatever when schedules come out?

If you're Stone, you should email firms you're interested in now and try to interview before EIP. That's a huge upside because you can approach EIP differently if you have an offer in hand

Hello fellow TLSers,
3.38 (missed stone by half-grade), 2 years of substantial WE (imagine non-MBB consulting or sth along the line), non-URM, international background.
I'm shooting for M&A, prefer Public but PE work wouldn't be too bad. How does my bidlist look? All firms are NY

Bid Firm (FFB)
1. Debevoise (3)
2. Weil (4)
3. White & Case (5)
4. Ropes (6)
5. PW (9)
6. Cleary (10)
7. Willkie Farr (9)
8. Kirkland (28) I heard last year was an anomaly, high-priority firm for me
9. Akin Gump (11)
10. Latham (13)
11. Fried Frank (13)
12. Cooley (14)
13. Linklaters (17)
14. Paul Hastings (19)
15. Jones Day (19)
16. Shearman & Sterling (20)
17. Simpson Thatcher (22)
18. Cravath (19)
19. Dechert (19)
20. Hogan Lovells (24)
21. Clifford Chance (27)
22. Freshfields (28)
23. Mayer Brown (26)
24. Cadwalader (26)
25. Schulte (27)
26. Morgan Lewis (24)
27. Greenberg Traurig (*)
28-30 Secondary/international markets I have ties at, all no failed bid last year

Yes. You don't need to tell them you're bidding them at EIP. Just send an email to the recruiter that looks something like this:

----

Dear XX,

I'm a rising 2L at Columbia Law School and am writing because I'm interested in a summer position with XX Firm next year. (If it's a secondary market where you're spending your 1L summer, consider putting a line about your ties/why you want to be there. No need to do this for NYC firms).

I'm interested in XX firm because of XXX (great XXX practices, attorneys you know there, etc.). XX Firm is a top choice of mine, and I would love to come to your office to interview in the next few weeks (if you're trying to interview with a firm in a secondary market where you are for the summer, let them know that you'd like to do it before you go back to NYC).

I've attached my resume and transcript, and I look forward to hearing you.

---

If you don't hear back from them before the bidding deadline, you should still bid them. You can always cancel it later if you get a pre-EIP screener.

Hi folks here is me: Stone(~3.5), no WE, secondary journal and average softs. Goal is NY transactional work, but also am open to Asia (weak tie) and London (no tie at all). I don't know if my list is too tight in terms of getting A job, but OCS is being immensely unhelpful on that point. Much appreciated!

The biggest problem with this bid list is that it's too tight. You're going to miss a lot of bids. You should be aiming for a minimum of two spots above last year's FFB.

Pulling firms out from the top might also give you a chance to add a couple firms where you're almost certain to get an offer. You probably would get something from this list with a 3.5, but I don't think it's a 100% certainty--it's pretty aggressive.

Anyone know which of Akin Gump or Fried Frank is more grade selective? They have similar stats and I am trying to take one of them off my list.

Thanks!

Low stone, secondary journal, about 3.44, here again with an updated bidlist. I feel relatively good about this list, but I'm really worried about FFB. I'm tempted to drop Milibank and give everything more space. But they gave out 36 offers last year to a mix of honors and non-honors. It would be tough to drop them.

I mentioned before bidding SullCrom because I went to 2 events and had a followup convo with an associate that recruiting knows about, so I'd like to try it. Cravath just because.

Does anyone have any critiques or advice on FFB?

Also, if you're confused why a firm isn't there, check the bottom since I'm probably applying to their Chicago office.

1. Debevoise (3) +2
2. Weil (4) +2
3. Milibank (6) +3
4. Paul Weiss (9) +5
5. Cleary (10) +5
6. Gibson Dunn (10) +4
7. SullCrom (10) +3
8. Davis Polk (11) +3
9. Akin Gump (11) +2

3.0x GPA, so I am obviously worried about striking out. I'm Asian American (not sure if URM for biglaw purposes?) and have some irrelevant WE. Everything is NYC.

5. Milbank New York (6)
6. Allen & Overy (6)
7. Ropes & Gray (6)
8. Cahill (9)
9. Willkie Farr (9)
10. Akin Gump (11)
11. Fried Frank (13)

14. Orrick (15)
15. K&L Gates (16)
16. Linklaters (17)

24. Hunton and Williams (23)
25. Hogan Lovells (24)
26. Haynes and Boone (25)
27. Cadwalader (26)
28. Mayer Brown (26)
29. APKS (26)
30. Schulte Roth (27)
31. Clifford Chance (27)
32. Pryor Cashman (27)
33. Freshfields (28)
34. Stroock (none)
Bro, this bid list is terrifying to look at. Like, this bid list could totally screw you. It's WAY too tight. Why is Ropes and Gray bid at 7 when the FFB last year is 6? Unless the firm now has more interview slots than it did last year, a firm will never go down on the FFB list.

You need at least 3 spaces between the FFB and your bid. If I were you, I'd aim for 4 or 5 spaces. Your number one priority should be getting as many interviews as possible. You should go through the data and see what firms have the highest screener to callback ratios, and callback to offer ratios. Use that as a way to narrow down your list.

I would start but cutting Weil and Ropes. That would give your FFB some breathing room, and those firms are unlikely to offer a CB to someone with your grades regardless (no offense).

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
