Have you looked to see whether those firms let you bid multiple offices? I'm guessing they don't.

Bro, this bid list is terrifying to look at. Like, this bid list could totally screw you. It's WAY too tight. Why is Ropes and Gray bid at 7 when the FFB last year is 6? Unless the firm now has more interview slots than it did last year, a firm will never go down on the FFB list.

You need at least 3 spaces between the FFB and your bid. If I were you, I'd aim for 4 or 5 spaces. Your number one priority should be getting as many interviews as possible. You should go through the data and see what firms have the highest screener to callback ratios, and callback to offer ratios. Use that as a way to narrow down your list.
I would start but cutting Weil and Ropes. That would give your FFB some breathing room, and those firms are unlikely to offer a CB to someone with your grades regardless (no offense).

Rustyburger and jbagel, thanks for the feedback! I agree it's definitely too tight and I needed help picking the right firms to remove. I'll start with Weil and Ropes. Should I cut Sidley as well? They gave 63% of their offers last year to non-stone or transfer students, but they are also ranked so high on Vault that I imagine most of those offers were to median and above grades (as mentioned, I'm 3.0x). That would also move up my entire list.

Sidley's more realistic than Weil or Ropes. If you have a good reason for keeping the firm, I'd consider it a reach and leave it. I'd also cut Jones Day though.

FWIW, Sidley was one of the firms that asked Petal to call all offer recipients because their yield was way lower than what they expected. Personally, I wouldn't read too much into it, but some posters seem to think those firms will make more offers this year around.

Hey all,

Hoping for some perspective on my bidlist, I appreciate any thoughts.

Context: 3.6 GPA (and Stone), secondary journal, 4 years substantive legal work experience before law school, Not URM. Toward the bottom of the list are a few throwaways just so I can tell them I bid for a firm but didn't' get an interview (like Sidley).

1. Boies (1)
2. Debevoise (3)
3. Weil (4)
4. Paul Weiss (9)
5. Cleary (10)

I don't think you need Cadwalader. I'd switch Gibson and SulCrom (have a feeling Gibson will clear higher, it's been higher in the past). Does Skadden let you bid multiple offices?

If you're going to throw away bids, why would you not put them at the very bottom? Makes no sense to put them ahead of other firms that you're actually trying to hit.

As for Skadden, yes, according to the New York and Boston office postings.

I have a friend visiting the US (more specifically Boston) for the first three weeks of August, and I promised to visit her one weekend. When do we start hearing back about callbacks, roughly? Would it be best for me to go the first weekend of August right after screeners are over? Or do I need that weekend to prepare as well? Are weekends in August generally just spent preparing for callbacks?

Preparing for callbacks is not really necessary at all. However, just with the logistics of planning, I'd probably stick around during that weekend.

That being said, you'll start getting callbacks after the first day of EIP. Which is to say, during the evening of that day, and certainly during day 2 of EIP.

I scheduled my first callback during day 4 of EIP because my schedule was very light that day.

I don't think you really have to prepare that much beyond looking up your interviewers and trying to come up with a few points about the firm to talk about. If you're going to bid any non-NYC markets, you may have to use Sundays for travel. If you're only bidding NYC you should be fine.

Rising 3L looking to trade up here. Is it just me or does it seem like there are much fewer firms hiring 3Ls at EIP this year? I remember firms like Kirkland and Skadden were both there last year...

Not OP, but to be clear: we should be e-mailing firms we're interested in but don't get through bidding after interview schedules come out and asking them for an interview at EIP? Or outside of EIP? Any upside to just e-mailing them now instead of waiting until the 25th or whatever when schedules come out?
If you're Stone, you should email firms you're interested in now and try to interview before EIP. That's a huge upside because you can approach EIP differently if you have an offer in hand
Hi - should non-Stone (not even close) do pre-EIP emails as well? Or just wait til EIP since firms would not respond anyways. Looking through the threads and seems no one has provided a good answer to that, tks!

I really don't know, but my instinct is that you should not email firms you're trying to interview with at EIP but should email all other firms

For mass-mailing, do you include a cover letter for each firm, or just stick to the materials that they are requesting for EIP?

Hi all - My situation is similar to another poster earlier. Terrible grades (3.0X), non-URM (I think), secondary journal, irrelevant work experience. Rightly afraid of striking out, but staying positive. My strategy: Focusing on firms with no grade requirements, lower percentage of offers to honor students, and good ratios of callbacks. All NY firms. Please feel free to critique harshly. Really appreciate your wisdom!

1. Sidley (2) - only included b/c large classes; remove?
2. Proskauer (3) - only included b/c large classes; remove?

12. K&L (16)
13. Linklaters (17)
14. Vinson/Huges (18)/(19) - unsure which I should choose
15. Paul Hastings (19)
16. Dechert (19)
17. Shearman (20)
18. Pillsbury (20)
19. Winston (22)

Others - Shepard NY (N/A), Shepard LA (24), Denton (N/A), Holland (N/A), Reed Smith (N/A) + really hoping I can pick up even more interviews during.

This is my updated (and hopefully final) list. I'm Kent/secondary/KJD

I want DC Lit (preferably white collar defense). Are there any firms that I'm missing? I tried to get the big NY firms(Watchell/CSM/SC/Simpson Thatcher) and then all the good DC Lit firms (plus Munger).

Students have told me that international offices will fly me to the location for a callback, OCS has advised that they will do skype. Any idea which is true?

1. Boies (DC) (1)
2. Sidley Austin (DC) (2)
3. Hogan Lovells (DC) (6)
4. Sullivan and Cromwell (NY) (10)
5. Gibson Dunn (DC) (11)
6. Davis Polk (NY) (11)
7. Akin Gump (DC) (12)
8. Skadden (DC) (15)

The list looks good to me. As far as international callbacks, I know some people who were flown to London. Not sure about Asia though.

Does anyone have any feedback on this? I'm in a similar situation - but definitely non-URM. Should I add Ropes to this list? Their honors ratio is kind of high...

Are interview dates an issue to consider? My breakdown is 10 on Day 1, 10 on Day 2, and 5 on Day 3 and 4. Is there a strategy to consider and stress out about, or is this something that will just work itself out? Thanks in advance.

While in a perfect world there would be a better balance, this is not atypical. I'd just deal with it unless there are firms on Day 1 or Day 2 you really don't need and could care less about. I'd wait till add/drop to consider this though.

For the first day, just make sure you have all of your firms, names and relevant info (interviewer facts, firm facts, room number and time) in order. would suggest making small cards with the info, so you can read in the lobby as you wait for the interview. If it's 3 or 4 floors difference, the stairs are probably better than elevator. It will get crowded in the elevators. Outside of that, there's not much you can do if the partner keeps you or holds you up. It may happen.

That said, 10 is manageable. For the other days, if you feel worried, come in earlier to try and grab some extra interviews (especially on the last day if you are feeling like call backs haven't materialized, assuming you're all NYC).

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
