The rule I was taught (no idea if it's right) with dress shirts was to only leave the collar unbuttoned if it was a point or spread collar shirt, in which case even a crew neck undershirt was usually fully covered. With a button down collar however, I was taught to leave the top non-collar button unbuttoned as well. My solution was just to not wear button down collar shirts to work.axel.foley wrote:V neck undershirts will solve your problem. I would not go for a tank top (I assume you mean a wife beater) as that seems odd with business attire.JustMe83 wrote:What is the consensus on wearing a white tee under button down shirts? I always do this when buttoning up for a suit/tie, but I'm working at a business casual firm so the top button will usually be open, and I feel like it looks decidedly dorky and low class to have a white t collar popping out from under, say, a blue or lavender shirt. But at the same time I don't want to risk sweating through my button down and the tee gives some nice protection from that. Would wearing a white tank top instead work, or is that some sort of faux pas?

Guide to Pulling Off This Look:
Rule 1 to : be attractive.
Rule 2: don't be unattractive. (This also applies for offers.)

For business professional for women, if I chose to wear a gray skirt suit should it be dark grey or light grey. And what color top goes well with it (if wearing black heels). I usually wear black suits with a blue button up but I want to do something different since that's all I ever wore to interviews.

AE with a pretty solid Chili special right now if you still don't have shoes or just want to splurge. $245 is not bad at all. Student discount would normally get you around $295.

Are black shirts with the dark grey suits a no no?Gray wrote:Just preference--I'd do dark grey with white, light grey or light blue. Light pink can look good too but it's not really my thing. To follow up on this, is there a double super secret student special that includes shoe trees? I remember seeing that somewhere but it looks like it's just a discount.Dr. Nefario wrote:AE with a pretty solid Chili special right now if you still don't have shoes or just want to splurge. $245 is not bad at all. There used to be one that was $350 for shoe trees, belt, and shoes. DK if they do it anymore.EncyclopediaOrange wrote:To follow up on this, is there a double super secret student special that includes shoe trees? I don't think they do it anymore. It's now a 25% discount for active members of the military, students, and first responders. Unclear whether the discount applies to the belts and shoe trees (which came in the $350 deal for students previously).Dr. Nefario wrote:There used to be one that was $350 for shoe trees, belt, and shoes. I start tomorrow and I read last years thread as it was happening and I thought the stress over suit or not suit to a firm that said no need for a suit was stupid.
and now i'm stressing about the same fucking thing.

While I appreciate good fashion, I must point out that since over 95% of SA's get an offer, it could be deduced that fashion sense doesn't matter at all. Also, look at senior associates and partners as a group - a pretty sad looking bunch.

Black dress shirts are always a no for men. What if 95% of SAs follow TLS fashion advice? Or even 90 and the rest are HCCN?Mickfromgm wrote:While I appreciate good fashion, I must point out that since over 95% of SA's get an offer, it could be deduced that fashion sense doesn't matter at all. Regarding work product and feedback, no news is always good news? I assume if something I do is unacceptably shitty, someone would tell me about it?

No news is fine. Lawyers are unbelievably bad at giving feedback. That goes double for summers. When you complete a few weeks/projects, just go ask someone.

Yeah, this. Don't expect anyone to go out of their way to give you feedback. You often have to go seek it out. I'd also suggest not just popping in an office asking for feedback on the spot. Shoot the person an email asking for a few minutes (like 15) to briefly discuss. This will give them a chance to actually read your work product.Martin Brody wrote:No news is fine.
