I imagine the consequence is that you would likely burn a bridge at x agency, but it sounds like that shouldn't matter much to you given the better opportunity for you and your family. People generally understand that these things happen.

I applied kind of on a whim, and honestly was shocked by the offer. I guess burning the bridge wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but I feel awkward about the whole thing.

Which agency and how long ago did you accept? Have you gotten your "official" letter and started the background check?

I don't feel comfortable saying which agency, but I do know that the background check has not started yet. At least that.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I agree that the worst that will happen is that you burn a bridge with the agency, if that. I would also feel awkward, but just write a polite email saying thanks, but no thanks and that you have to do what's best for your family. Do it asap though just out of courtesy (as long as your other offer is solid).

Thank you for your thoughts. I'm trying to see this as a positive. Someone who legit wants the job will get it, and I will get the job I legit want.

Was this after receiving a tentative offer? Or they checked your references after an interview?

Well, it's always possible your references didn't say great things, but I think the most likely scenario is that they check references of all finalists and just ended up going with someone that was a slightly better fit.

I applied as a current clerk, but I was told specifically that the entire honors program was done - regardless of current or future clerk.

Officially rescinded my acceptance at one of the more civil rights oriented agencies. I'm not comfortable with the odds of funding being pulled.

I think because there are so few people given offers that being the one to do any of those things would easily out the poster to anyone who knows the whole pool.

Rejected though, that's a good question, because it shouldn't matter.

No updates at all. I doubt we'll hear anything during a freeze, and apparently some offers from the IRS have been rescinded. I don't know if this includes attorneys-to-be, but it is definitely something to think about. A bit of a bummer though because I had a very nice interview and never heard another word.

Tentative offers for HP are exempt from the freeze. Those still in the interview process are probably another story.
