This is a serious question.

I'm going to be a 1L this fall and I have something very important I have to go to on August 7, 2013. It only just hit me that this might interfere with OCI before my 2L year. I'm really worried...already.

Bad flame.

Also, defer for a year so you can go to OCI in 2014.

August 7 is really early. Check your school's recruiting calendar if you're seriously worried.

Yes, it's a Wednesday, so it can't be your wedding. Anything else can be moved. If it's during OCI (or even during a diversity fair, if you qualify), it's your one shot to get BigLaw, so it's worthy moving everything else in your life.

Even if its your own wedding you reschedule. Even if its a funeral, send flowers and hope they understand. You don't miss a day of OCI

Planning a funeral > 3 months out. Must really hate the guy.

Obviously you don't miss OCI. There really isn't an excuse outside of emergency surgery... which you don't plan 3 months out.

It's actually a year and three months out. So I guess its not a funeral. Must be a wedding, but that's plenty of time to reschedule.

I mean, if this is not flame and you can't skip whatever the obligation is, assuming this is a bidding OCI just bid on all firms that come on the other days. It shouldn't reduce the number of screening interviews you get, although it will of course reduce the breadth of firms that you will have to choose from.

August 7 is really really REALLY early; CLS's EIP is the earliest one on the record and we don't start til Aug 10 or so. So i think you will be fine. However, if you really no choice but to miss OCI -- e.g. if it's your sister's/mom's/dad's wedding, and it can't be rescheduled, I would maximize your chances of interviewing with firms by attending a lot of other interviewing events. Diversity or IP fairs, if you qualify (and maybe even if you don't).
