Predictions on where new "Miami market" will end up on comp? Weil has now matched (believe this includes Miami although NALP does not yet reflect) but unclear that GT will match even in NYC. Are we really going to see a 30k spread between locals and satellites?

GT already said it won’t match. See https://abovethelaw.com/2018/06/greenbe ... -salaries/.
That means Miami will stay put, except for maybe ML, Weil, and a handful of other satellites.

Anon from above. Yes have seen that article, but GT is ultimately a Miami firm (and the only market it dominates) so wondering if there’s a scenario where they go up a bit while NYC stays put. A 30k gap is meaningful.

No. Same reason it publicly dragged its feet about going to 160, as opposed to 170 or 180, in the first place. Also, I was flat-out told from one of the exec partners at a rival firm that they didn’t want to go up to 160 but felt forced when GT finally moved. So no chance any one of its peer firms will force the market to go up, either.

Miami will stay at 160. My firm got a lot of backlash from clients when they raised salaries/rates.

Top partners in Miami can only charge like 800-900/hr (there are exceptions). Many partners bill around 600-700/hr. Associates bill around 300-500/hr. In Miami (and FTL/Boca/WPB, since they seem to generally be one market) 160 is the most prevalent amount.

A poster mentioned above that the satellite offices rarely promote associates to partner, but if your goal is to make bank, go to one of the few market firms. Aside from White & Case, most of the satellite offices have fewer than 20 associates (probably closer to 10), so it’s a lot easier to pay them NY market. Also, the market firms aren’t really doing Miami work (or FL work in general). Those offices are just extensions of the NY office for the most part and do work for NY clients (and bill at NY rates).

You can’t compare Weil/JD/MWE Miami to GT/HK Miami.

^ that’s exactly what I was trying to say earlier. Yup. Spot on. That said, litigators should probably lean more toward the local firms because it’s very important to get to know the judges, local bar, etc. really won’t do that at Weil.

Why isn't MWE on the Vault Miami list? Appears to be one of the bigger satellites + 180k.

Vault seems to have more accurate salary data than even NALP in some cases. Based on that list, looks like Duane Morris seems to be missing, along with Saul Ewing and maybe Cozen.

Vault salaries aren’t entirely accurate. As for the firms above, all good lot spots. Stearns is best. Berger next. MWE is, of course, the most recognizable and highest-paying firm listed, but not too involved in local lit. Lost a few big lit partners last year. Rest are all fine.

I wouldn’t be surprised if W&C didn’t raise Miami at all. The one bonus of working at W&C Miami is that it pays market bonuses in Miami. I don’t think any of the other firms do. I could be wrong, though.

Miami and Atlanta are on the secondary pay tier but Charlotte is paid like NYC/DC….. never have understood the reasoning.

White & Case raised in Miami and is giving summer bonuses. The new scale starts $183,000. See: https://abovethelaw.com/2018/06/elite-b ... to-boot/2/.

Charlotte market is $155k (below the 160 in Miami and Atlanta). There are some firms in all three markets that pay NY market.

That 8th year associate salary is sad.

The Charlotte firms I know of (with a Miami or Atlanta location) pay NYC market....higher than their Miami and/or Atlanta locations. Never understood the reasoning (especially since I've never thought of Charlotte as being a more lucrative mkt or that their COL is higher than Mia/Atl.)

There is probably only one firm that has an office in all 3 markets. So it’s irrelevant because it doesn’t show a trend.

However, it’s probably harder to convince people to move to charlotte than it is to do for Miami and Atlanta. I mean, Charlotte is just becoming trendy now.

How is JD Miami ranked ahead of Weil?

McDermott is where it should be.
