This OCI may not have the marked recovery c/o 2012 hoped for

Some firms will not be hiring rising 2Ls at all to counterbalance deferrals.

um... thanks for that over-broad, unsubstantiated, needlessly-anonymous bit of pessimism.

OCI 2010, for c/o 2012, would be for grads starting in Fall 2012. To my knowledge, no firms have deferred any incoming associates that far back, not are there likely plans to do so.

I'm not saying NY TO 190 WE ALL GONNA GET JOBS, but I don't think deferals are going to be nearly the factor for OCI 2010 & C/O 2012 as they were for OCI 2009 & C/O 2011.

Early reports from one T14 are that every firm who canceled OCI there last year has already signed up for this year. 2012 will be better than 2011, but it will still be bad. HTH.

umm...if markedly less firms do that this year than last, then it very well may be a marked recovery

tho don't hold your breath

Well Orrick is taking 1l summers, so that can't be a bad sign.

Can someone provide hard data or at least relevant anecdote suggesting oci will be better, worse, or the same?

Especiallly curious to hear what firms are projecting

From what I understand, we don't have access to hard data, and we may never get it. Though I would be interested in some relevant anecdotes...

Check out the NALP Directory. It lists the projected number of summer associates they will hire for 2010. That number could flex in either direction, of course, but it's the best you'll get right now. You can also contact your school's career office and see if they will tell you how many firms have pre-registered for OCI at this point and if they are getting back any of the firms they lost last year. How open CDO will be to this request will vary by school.

2010 NALP data are those summering IN 2010, not being hired during OCI of 2010 (who will summer in 2011). So it's a lagging indicator at best.

Buzz is (from my source + TLS) they many more firms are participating in OCI this year than last. Looks like 2011 really got the worst of it.

I have faith in the Iceland volcano to tip Europe back into recession, foul the capital markets and condemn the Class of 2012 to oblivion.

Taking 1L summers is little commitment since they know the student will probably do 2L summer elsewhere, and there really isn't a no-offer stigma attached to 1L SAs. There is also a strong interest in maintaining a tie to schools (especially for a firm like Orrick that didn't/won't really have a proper SA class this summer), not only with career services but also with the students and the word-of-mouth benefits of having students who summered there... or at least this is what an Orrick hiring partner told me.
Orrick has already announced they're hiring 2Ls next summer, at least as part of their New Talent Model system.

http://abovethelaw.com/2010/02/mintz-le ... 0-to-2012/

I am doing research, but as far as I know, it was a rare occurrence.

Also, my school had this to say about deferrals:

In the Spring of 2009 some large law firms began to announce that incoming associates' start dates would be deferred by a few months to a year. Each firm had a different situation and not every firm deferred start dates. NALP provided guidance to law schools that they should report these students as employed at their firms regardless of their start date and if they were volunteering at public sector employers during their deferral period; so the above chart reflects that. To assist prospective and admitted students in understanding this situation, we undertook an effort to obtain specific start dates for each of these graduates:
(i) 44% started with their firm in Fall 2009;
(ii) 28% started with their firm in January/February 2010;
(iii) 4% will start with their firm in Spring 2010;
(iv) 9% will start with their firm in Fall 2010; and
(v) 3% will start with their firm in January 2011.
(Of the graduates employed at large law firms 88% responded with their specific start date; the remaining 12% while confirming employment did not provide us with their start date). Those whose start dates were deferred to the Spring 2010 or later, received stipends from their firms and are currently volunteering and gaining legal experience in a variety of public sector settings.

No 2012, fortunately.
