Thanks Ken! Much appreciated!
+1

Where was the article from? I didn't get a chance to read it but is there a possibility of someone else finding it on the Internet somewhere?

The OP wrote it.

Its too bad the OP decided to remove the post. For those who viewed this post when it was still there and have not cleared their browser's cache since then, you can easily restore it using any desktop search, though. Alternatively, if you cleared your cache, but used any desktop search application such as google desktop search, it will still be found in this application's cache, just run it and put in some exact phrase containing words from the original post, such as ""Above median applicants can almost always procure" If you are that lucky, a PM would be much appreciated! Btw, for those wondering, "A district court in Nevada has ruled that the Google Cache is a fair use."

Damnit when is this post going to come back??

I dont remember if it was in the original post, but can anyone lend some insight here: If you get in 2 schools with the same ranking, but have in-state tuition at one and the other is a private (16k vs 40k), will they even bother negotiating? Or is it pretty much restricted to merit-offers.

thanks

I would go off total cost of attendance, not tuition, not scholarship. If you get into very closely ranked schools or you are negotiating with a lower ranked school then you should be able to negotiate.

Example.
Public 25 ranked school is Total Cost of Attendance = $35,000 with no scholarship
Private 25 ranked school is Total Cost of Attendance = $45,000 with 10k a year scholarship

With this you are able to negotiate. Simply say that private school 25 is your top choice, however it will be 30k over 3 years cheaper to attend public school 25, and if they can match or beat that price that they will become your top choice, you can off course then daisy chain this up a couple more schools.

hooooo boy that is sickeningly awesome to hear. muchas gracias amigo. for the record the public school is UNC. talk about fkn value.

edit: holdon i might be an idiot or just up for too many hours in a row LSAT prepping, but i may or may not have misread your post. is the bold part what i would tell public school 25 or private school 25 lol?

Chuch, thanks for reposting the thread. I haven't finished reading all of it, but it looks like a lot of useful info. I really appreciate it and know others will as well.

Thanks for putting this back up!! I will certainly give this a try. I would not have tried to negotiate merit aid if I hadn't read this article.

Okay, looking for a little help. I don't really know how good my chances look.

I'm a black male, 3.17/172. I've gotten into two schools so far: UVA and NYU.

I want to be in NYC more than anywhere else. I've gotten a full-tuition Dean's Scholarship at UVA, but no word from NYU yet regarding merit aid.

Would I have much luck negotiating with NYU with the scholarship at UVA? How much?

This is awesome, I am curious about more data for splitters, nontrad, urm, but its probably too tough to figure out.

This is a very good thread, thanks for making it!!!

I think I have a slightly different question though. I have gotten into many tier 2 schools with predictable scholarships for my numbers, exactly what everyone else with my numbers is getting, give or take. Can I negotiate for a -better- scholarship by saying I will definitely attend if they give me a better scholarship... if I asked in a nice way? Or is this not gonna work?

I had my first successful correspondence with a law school regarding scholarships last week. Largely thanks to the original post I was able to increase my award $11,000 per year! Now I just have to wait for all of my other requests to go through and let the real negotiations begin!

Thanks Chuch!

Does anyone have any advice on how to negotiate stipulations (ie top 1/3) out of an aid offer?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
