I'll be there!
Fo the other poster: You should also check out the village voice for apartments and most people have been telling me to look outside of Manhattan theres a commute but the apartments seem significantly cheaper.

Re: Cardozo Class of 2012
i've narrowed it down to two schools and am like, 80% sure it's going to ultimately be cardozo. just have to wrap my head around the debt even with 23K a year...anybody going to the event on the 7th? it will likely be my make or break experience. that, or more money being offered which seems unlikely.
in regards to an apartment, the only place worth staying out of manhattan would be somewhere near the L in brooklyn (williamsburg, greenville) because it would take you right into union square. if you can move like, a month early you might be able to get cheaper rents. the nyt just ran an article about how rents have gone down dramatically, but as a former real estate agent i can tell you august is one of the busiest months for moves anywhere = more competition for places and higher prices.
I'm going to try to move around July 15th, take my time finding a sweet fucking deal, and enjoying the city for a few weeks before i prepare to kick ass...

Certain parts of Queens are also great and an easy commute (think N, W, R, Q line.. maybe even the 7 line).
Then again, I may or may not have some resident bias... Anyway, Queens is underrated and MUCH more affordable than manhattan. In some cases, it takes less time to get to the village from queens than it does from other points in manhattan.

Anyone have thoughts on whether to use a rental broker or not? As a non-new yorker the idea of paying someone to hook me up with an apartment seems outrageous, but I've heard it's the norm in nyc...

If you know someone out here or you feel familiar enough with where you'd like to live, then you can handle it yourself...but be prepared to spend a good about of time doing so. If not, it's not a totally terrible idea to use a broker, so long as the broker you're using is good at their job. Luckily, in the current market there are very few left who aren't. If you start early enough and find a very hungry agent who is willing to work with you, there are some landlords who are willing to pay the broker fee nowadays but it'll limit your choices a bit more.thea77 wrote:Anyone have thoughts on whether to use a rental broker or not? I'll be doing it myself, but I know the area and worked in real estate...best of luck!

I was like, 99 percent committed and found out I got into UMN today. I'm tired of deciding things.
I think I'm just gonna go live on a beach in Central America...

Well congrats on that! This cycle is definitely full of surprises.. Either way you have some great choices!JPetrella18 wrote:I was like, 99 percent committed and found out I got into UMN today. I'm tired of deciding things.

Regarding apartments, the main thing people need to keep in mind is that Cardozo is near union square, which means it is the 2nd easiest place to get to in the city after times square. Also, Brooklyn >>>>>>Queens. Way more beautiful and interesting. Even if you live off a train line that doesn't stop at union square, it's easy to transfer or take the bus crosstown. Manhattan is narrow!

Hey, thanks for the apartment advice you guys. I am paying my deposit today, so I am now officially committed! There are so many people bashing Cardozo on this site, but the impression I got from the school was overwhelmingly positive. What is up with all the haters...

And false. Sections of brooklyn that most of us will probably be able to afford are DEFINITELY not more beautiful and/or interesting than decent parts of Queens. Just saying.

At the risk of turning this thread into a Queens/BK debate, I'll say this:hudsonRR2 wrote:UMN= snow.fluffy wrote:Well congrats on that! This cycle is definitely full of surprises.. BK=
Prospect Park!
Ft. Greene
Prospect Heights
Clinton Hill
Park Slope...
Bed Stuy (I lived there and love the buildings)
Williamsburg
Coney Island and Brighton Beach (far, but fun beach trips!)
Queens=
Astoria
Long Island City (industrial)
Forest Hills if you want to basically live in the suburbs.
(and a slew of other ethnic neighborhoods--I won't deny that eating in Queens is great and cheap)
But, to each her/his own!
