True, but you have to be very, very flexible about finding a balance between what you're willing/able to pay and your minimum needs and expectations. It seems to me that Chapel Hill is one of those places where you either have to be willing to live in hovel-like conditions or you have to pay top dollar for a so-so place that in any other city its size would be pay for a bigger place that's twice as nice. For example, I toured a one-bedroom duplex in Carrboro in which the rent was supposed to be about $750. The house, which was ancient, had a window AC unit and was situated in right next to a creek at the bottom of a steep hill -- right in the middle of a floodway. Other townhouses and condos I toured were better, but much more expensive. Unless you have insider information, you're not going to find anything approaching a great place here that's also affordable for a law student.
By the way, a one bedroom right now at Meadowmont, Alta Springs (and possibly Southern Village) will set you back about $1,000 a month, more when you factor in utilities.
