True, but you have to be very, very flexible about finding a balance between what you're willing/able to pay and your minimum needs and expectations. It seems to me that Chapel Hill is one of those places where you either have to be willing to live in hovel-like conditions or you have to pay top dollar for a so-so place that in any other city its size would be pay for a bigger place that's twice as nice. It is, in other words, a college town.

For example, I toured a one-bedroom duplex in Carrboro in which the rent was supposed to be about $750. The house, which was ancient, had a window AC unit and was situated in right next to a creek at the bottom of a steep hill -- right in the middle of a floodway. Other townhouses and condos I toured were better, but much more expensive. Unless you have insider information, you're not going to find anything approaching a great place here that's also affordable for a law student.

By the way, a one bedroom right now at Meadowmont, Alta Springs (and possibly Southern Village) will set you back about $1,000 a month, more when you factor in utilities.

Did anyone receive the immunization info yet? Also, does anyone know how the class picking process works? Also, are all the funds allocated yet? Dean States said it'd be decided after the 2nd deadline, but mine lists a tuition grant of $400 already.

I have been completing my immunization forms online. I had to go to Campus Health on Friday to get a Measles test.

From what I understand from Lisa Inman, the Law School Financial Aid Director, the $400 tuition grant is not the same as the need based scholarships due out in June.

So I just finished looking at the calendar for UNC Law and it seems like we have a 4 day orientation from 8am to 5pm each day. The Calendar says Trial Advocacy Intense Session, is this what they are calling our orientation? If anyone knows for sure whether or not we have a 4 day orientation I would like to know. Man I can't wait for law school, oh yea!

Do you mean this calendar?

Maybe the Trial Advocacy is for 2L or 3L's?

I was looking at this one: http://www.law.unc.edu/calendar/

After a little research I found out that trial advocacy is another word for mock trial (1L mistake). So your probably right that this is just for the upper class men. I guess we have only a two day orientation.

Sillies, go here: http://www.law.unc.edu/documents/academ ... ar0910.pdf

The 2009-10 academic calendar says that 1L orientation will be Aug 21 and 22, and classes begin Monday, August 25. Then we have a holiday on September 1! And spring exams end May 5, that's even earlier than college! So we basically have a four month summer.

Is anyone living in Meadowmont, by the way?

What exactly is MAGIC DAY, according to the UNC calendar? Any ideas? Maybe I am missing something very easy here....

I am considering Meadowmont Apartments. They're pretty expensive, but definitely the nicest I have seen so far.

I feel like it's NCAA related, but it's after March. I googled "UNC Magic Day" and the first thing that popped up was an article about a UNC student who does magic shows. Ha.

Yeah meadowmont is pricey for the area, but after living in a closet this year in NYC, I'm going wild.

Your looking at the 2008-2009 side of the calendar, but you do have the right link. MAGIC DAY sounds exciting!

Right. Wow, orientation is super late! That can't be correct.

I think that is correct for this year. They mentioned at ASD that the law school is starting a week later than the undergrads....so I think everything has been pushed back a bit. I'm not looking at the calendar, but I think we actually start classes on August 30th!

Yah...Meadowmont would be a really nice experience. So many amenities...plus you've got the busline running right in front of the place. Can't beat that.

Does anyone know how much the parking passes will be if we receive one through the lottery system? If anyone went there for undergrad how much were they last year?

I spoke to the head of parking and she said parking spots aren't available for 1L students (even under lottery), unless there are really special circumstances (like you live 50 miles away, must drive, and can't use the free CH public transportation). If you hear anything different, let us know!

Anyone have thoughts on Walden at Greenfields, the Villages or further thoughts on Poplar Place?

I myself am going to be living in The Villages this year. They have a nice size studio that I really liked and the best kitchens of all the places I visited. I also viewed Glen Lennox, Laurel Ridge, The Bridges at Chapel Hill and Autumn woods. Of all of them the best place I found worth the money was The Villages.

Did everyone receive the LEAP program invitation? If so are you thinking about doing it, if so why?

I received the email and I already applied. From what I read and heard about the program, they do a great job of preparing you for what is ahead. Since I have been out of school for a long time, I think this type of "camp" would be great for me, and help relieve some of the stress I have with starting school in the Fall.

As lengthy as that letter is, it sure is scant on details. Before I sign up for anything, I'm going to try to find out what exactly is on the syllabus for this and why they need seven hours each day ("not counting outside reading") to teach it.

Also, I couldn't help but notice no mention of COST.

I'm pretty sure its free. Otherwise I won't be doing it either.

I never heard anything about the Leap program. I did get the email about orientation and family day today though.

Does everyone get info about the Leap program/the opportunity to apply?

I was just looking at the email regarding "Orientation & Family Day 2009." Does anyone have any idea how we obtain a "UNC One Card?" It will probably be explained via email but I was just curious.

as an undergrad we just got them at the One Card office which is located near the Student Union and Student Stores across from the belltower on south road... it's just a student ID card but you then have an option to turn it into a debit card through wachovia(it's quite convenient and i'd reccommend it)

So this is a little off topic, but a huge deal to me. Does anyone (tarheels19) know if ALL the intramural sports are played on those two artificial turf fields? I just saw a picture of a softball game being played on those fields, and now I am extremely worried lol.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
