I will definitely be attending UF in the fall, and am pretty excited about it. Does anyone have any recommendations for housing or finding a roommate?

I was wondering the same... from the limited research that i've done, there are a few apartment complexes right near the law school but they don't exactly have the best reviews online... i'll be going up there in a week or two to check out places so hopefully I can provide some feedback

If you want to live right next to the law school (within walking distance), then your best bet is renting out a house on SW 2nd Ave. The area surrounding the law school is pretty and old and has little houses that are mostly rented out to students, although there are some really nice ones as well (the UF Golf Course is right there, to give you an idea). Of course, this involves finding a roommate, but there's no shortage of people looking for a roommate in Gainesville. Some of these houses are rented out by realtors, such as Bosshardt Realty (google other property managers as well to see what they have), but most are privately owned and you can find them advertising on craigslist (which is surprisingly non-sketchy here).

Other than that you're going to be looking on SW 34th St and 13th st and all the roads that branch out from there, like SW 20th. There's lots of really big, undergraduate apartment complexes that I would avoid like the plague - The Estates, Cabana Beach, Stoneridge, etc. Then there are some older complexes with sometimes sketchy management. And there are condos. Lots and lots of condos (my parents own one in Kensington South, and I love it - 2 bed/2.5 bath, HUGE kitchen, the only downside is that it's on SW 20th, so it can be pretty traffic-tastic at 5pm; I'm thinking about not going to UF for law so PM me if you're interested). If you don't mind commuting, you can even live in the downtown area (15 minutes away) in the duckpond area which is where the yuppies tend to flock after graduation and it's gorgeous. Or you can try to rent out a house in NW Gainesville, which shouldn't be too hard either right now in this economy. Everywhere in this town is a 15-minute car ride away, so if you have a car and can get a decal, then you can live pretty much anywhere.

Basically, you're going to have lots and lots of options. Gainesville is ridiculously overbuilt right now. You could show up the day before class and get an awesome deal on an apartment, so take your time, make sure you that you check the place out before you sign. I would say that if you're paying more than $600/month (including a/c & water), you're overpaying. You can find really nice places for much cheaper.

Will probably be attending in the fall, barring a last minute reach acceptance. Currently an undergrad at UF - shoot me a PM if you have any questions about Gainesville or UF.

I will be attending next year. What do you think is the best for 1L, roommate or no? Also, where are the best places to live on your own in the 'Ville. I graduated '06 from UF, lived in dorms and houses while there, and I am not currently to date with what's going on there now.

I think tempurabanana did a good job covering most of the living quarters, although if you want a single I'm not sure which complexes actually have them. There's a condo complex called Campus Edge that's about a 5-10 minute bike ride over to the law school with singles, I live there right now. I think Camelot, which is also a short bike ride, may have singles, but in the immediate vicinity of the law school it's all houses so if you want to live alone you'll probably have more than a short walk as a commute.

I'll be at the ASD.... I already sent my seat deposit and withdrew from everywhere else so I'm going mostly as an excuse to hang out with a friend up there.

Did anyone else get the email about dinner at the President's house? I think they're trying to keep us away from their centennial celebration at the law school.

I will be sending my seat deposit to UF within this week, but will be ridding out some WL at Duke and Columbia.

I have a feeling I will probably end up at UF. Go gators!

My friend got that email, but I did not. I'm not sure what the deal with it is. His numbers were much better than mine, so I wonder if it's some effort to woo more competitive students.

The routes that go right by the law school are routes 34, 5, and 43. There are other routes that go to campus (specifically the reitz union) and that's like a 5 or 10 minute walk to the law school. Hope this helps. =)

I went to admitted students day. Nothing earth shattering, which isn't suprising. In my case I mostly I wanted to get down and get a gut feel on my decision. They did address the rankings and suggested number gaming on "the school down the road". From everything I've heard, when it comes to hiring preference in the state UF is top dog rankings or no so that wasn't a concern of mine. Talked about career services, student services, financial aid.... They did mention the drop in class size to 300 which is cool, I do think that is the start of something great for UF. Also talked to enough current students to figure out the ins and outs of getting in-state status by year two for those of us coming from other place(totally do-able but there are a few snares to watch out for apparently)
RE finding roommates- there is a Levin class of 2012 facebook group with some folks looking. Also the law school has a law students only forum you can register for that has both people looking for rooms and those with open rooms.
Someone suggested living with other 1Ls is the best strategy since there is a "work ethic drop off" after that critical 1L year and you don't want your roommates offering you mojitos on the porch when you need to be studying.
