Well I got my scholarship today and I am now pretty much sold on Duke. I really wish I could have went to the admitted students weekend, it sounds like everyone had such a great time.

Hopefully we can get a good turnout of TLSers at Duke this coming fall.

I'm glad that Duke finally got some love! Also not 100% (but let's be realistic, Harvard's not going to call :( ).

dresq- did you visit any apartments at ASW? Did you see anything good?

I'm abroad right now, so I won't have a chance to get to Durham until May for the Summer Start program. Any info (student deals?) would be appreciated!

Also, more generally, I'm not opposed to the idea of a TLS roommate. If any summer starters are looking for one, PM me.

I didn't visit apartments, but only because I've lived in the area for the last 12 years (and I had to work Saturday morning). You can throw a rock in almost any direction from anywhere near Duke and hit an apartment complex. If I recall, there is a pretty nice complex adjacent to Duke forest, near the NC-751/Constitution Dr. area, with lots of Duke grad students. I may look there, myself. If you want a more urban feel, there are some newly renovated warehouses that have been converted into lofts near downtown. They're gated and pretty nice, but pricey. If I attend, I plan on living probably between Chapel Hill and Durham somewhere around Erwin/highway 15-501, or near in Southwest Durham near University Dr. and MLK Pkwy. I'm not sure how typical that is, but I want to be close to Chapel Hill. I'm sure other TSLers can give you some feedback and ideas from the tours, too. Basically, anything in the Duke University area or in the southwesterly direction towards Chapel Hill will be fine. You can get a really good idea of prices and what different areas are like by looking at places like http://www.aptbook.com/.

Oh, and roommates aren't a necessity around here. If you want one, you can take one, but it's not critical financially. You can afford to live VERY comfortably by yourself in a nice area for cheap.

I found this helpful housing link somewhere on the Duke site. There are ratings from undergrad, grad, and professional students as well as more helpful info. Lots of complexes are covered.

Congrats! How long does it take for scholarship to come in?

Only problem is that we'd be the only ones able to join :)

I would say I submitted around February 5th. The scholarship was postmarked the 12th. I was away and didn't receive it until today.

So approximately five weeks.

I'd say TLS, Craigslist, and facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/grou ... 7189334279) are good ways to start.

Came away from the ASW incredibly impressed with everything about Duke Law. The only thing holding me back from sending in that deposit is the ASW at UT this weekend, but I very much doubt that will change anything at all. So... cant wait to see yall at Duke next year. If anyone has any advice about apartment/roommate search for Durham, let me know..

I'm at 100%, sending in my deposit this week. Look forward to seeing you all on campus!

Hopefully within a few weeks I will be able to do the same. I'm just waiting on a few more schools, but I doubt they will be able to come close to Duke's offer.

Well, guess I should post here too. Like everyone else, I am not 100% (still waiting on Stanford), but I am sure enough that I have started looking for apartments. I think I will wait on finding a roommate until I am completely sure I am going to be at Duke in the fall. I do not want to screw someone over by saying I will be their roommate and then pulling out.

On that subject, if anyone finds an awesome dog friendly apartment I would love you forever if you let me know.

For a dog it might be better to rent a house if you can't find a complex that is pet friendly. I was looking online earlier today and renting a house seems like it may actually be more affordable than renting an apartment.

Where were you looking? I never seem to know where to look to find houses to rent.

Just a quick preliminary search turned up this website with a lot of listings, http://www.durhamrent.com/. I haven't really started searching yet, so I have no idea where these homes are in relation to Duke and what part of Durham they are in.

Glad y'all are going to join us at duke :D . I'm a 1L right now, and I'm actually trying to find a house myself. Most apartment complexes will be dog friendly. I'm currently living at Alexan Place which is more family oriented, but I'm thinking I'm gonna move next year, maybe to Pinnacle Ridge, just because there are generally more law students there which is what I want. Here's a quick breakdown of some of the apartment complexes and rough costs:

1) Belmont - kinda noisy, mostly for undergrads and LLM's, but it's within walking distance (still a long way though, probably 20 min). Cost - about $1000 a month for a 1 bedroom.

2) Alexan Place - Quiet, family oriented, newer apartments, and not too far from the law school (5-10 min drive). $775/1 BR on special - but they do 10 month leases.

3) Pinnacle Ridge - Not as new apartments, many law school kids live here, you can walk easily between apartment complexes, which makes it more dormish. $760/1 BR, no 10 month lease.

4) Lofts - Classy, pricey, and near the law school. Convenient for food and such, but price might not be worth it. $1400/1 BR.

5) Station Nine - Nice apartments, not too pricey, new fixtures etc..., but it's kinda far from Chapel Hill and not that close to the law school. $1050/1BR.

These are just a few, and I might actually get a house for next year with some friends, I'm still deciding.

Bill Hoye said that once everyone sends in their deposits they will send something out to help us find roommates.

Well, I know I am not living at the Lofts now.

This morning I was rejected at Harvard, and really at this point in my cycle I don't think I am going to get a better offer than the one given to me by Duke. I will probably be sending my deposit in within the next few weeks.

I will also be looking for a roommate come next fall. If anyone is interested let me know.
