Short housing advice from someone not from Madison: downtown is really nice but expensive, Basset neighborhood is popular but a little more undergrad as it gets closer to campus, Monroe St & Willy St are in opposite directions but are both further out and have more of a neighborhood feel. I'm living about 2.5 miles away from campus, right off of Willy St; it's waaaay cheaper than downtown but also necessitates a bus to get to school. There's more housing advice on our facebook group if you check that out. Otherwise PM me if you have any more specific questions!irishgrad wrote:just got in off the waiting list. i'm visiting again on monday. while i'm there i'd like to visit some apartment complexes... where do the law students usually stay?

Nice. I may be deferring for a year, but I plan on living near/on Willy St. or close to Vilas Park.billykraus wrote:Short housing advice from someone not from Madison: downtown is really nice but expensive, Basset neighborhood is popular but a little more undergrad as it gets closer to campus, Monroe St & Willy St are in opposite directions but are both further out and have more of a neighborhood feel. I thought you were definitely deferring...don't go backing out to Illinois again . And I think those are top 2 neighborhoods for grad students...can't really go wrong.coolkatz321 wrote:Nice. I may be deferring for a year, but I plan on living near/on Willy St. or close to Vilas Park.

Yeah, I'm pretty thrilled. I'm at UW-Madison to stay...no doubts whatsoever, it's the school for me.billykraus wrote:I thought you were definitely deferring...don't go backing out to Illinois again . Not to continue asking the same questions, but anybody need a roommate? hah. I started my searching today and it was a bit daunting. Anybody wanna room? I'd prefer walking distance, but I've heard that the transportation system is pretty good. PM me!

Looks like a bump is in order. Who's getting football tickets? Hockey tickets? Anybody else get the mailing demanding we write a REQUIRED bio for some directory? What's the best beer-filled yet chill grad student bar? Anybody else reading Getting to Maybe? Why is my summer internship so boring?
That should do it...

Yes to football, hockey, and ideally basketball tickets (home game against Duke).
We all got the mailing.
The bar scene wildly varies. "Chill" also depends on the night. A lot of grad students hit up areas by the capitol (genna's) while others go to the Plaza, Paul's Club and like 200 others near state.
No on the book
Your internship is boring because you decided to work at the Idaho State Historical Museum.

Ugh, the prospects of paying for the football tickets is daunting...I think it's another $100 on top of what the students pay...
I'll tell you something though--the student union had some really, really good beer...

Sell one big game and you have it paid for.
Split hockey and basketball tickets with someone.
You can be creative and find ways to get all 3 for around 200. Not to mention selling basketball and hockey tickets can also lower the price.

Those bios looked incredibly lame. Maybe as TLSers we should mix it up a little bit. Maybe more of a singles ad kind of feel?NightPutting wrote:Looks like a bump is in order. $20 to the first person who labels themselves as a "personal escort." I'm pretty psyched I get to put this wonderful bio off for a year, too.billykraus wrote:Those bios looked incredibly lame. Seriously going to hold you to that. IMO all the people in that example page sounded like dbags, might as well go balls to the wall with it. Right now I'm going between straight up singles ad style or romance novel.jcwilsn1 wrote:I'm gonna make it have more of a Indiana Jones - Adventure kind of story to it

Here's what I will find weird: Meeting a bunch of 1Ls next year, but being one of those people that deferred.

Here's my bio:
Ladies and gentlemen, if I say I'm a Wisconsin Law man, you will agree. I've travelled across half our state to be here this fall and to see about this Law School. I have many beers flowing across this city at many pints per day. If you have some negligence, and I have some negligence, and I have a straw called "contributory negligence," you see? There it is. And my straw reaches AAACRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSS the room and deprives you of any legal recourse. I CANCEL OUT YOUR NEGLIGENCE! I CANCEL IT OUT!
