Retake? Don't think it would make a difference...

Postby Eleven » Tue Dec 26, 2017 12:57 pm

Numbers: 168 (2 takes166 -> 168) and 3.5
Background: 8 years WE, STEM, patent holder

I'd like to practice big law in IP for a few years then do general or IP council for a larger company.

Preferred practice area: PA, MD, DE, DC

Haven't heard scholarship money from all places yet, but here is what I'm expecting:

1 - Vandy: 150k COA
2 - Temple / Nova: 60k COA
3 - W&L: 100k COA
4 - a 1 off shot at T13: 250k COA
5 - Retake and apply next cycle

My concern is that if I retake and get even a 172, none of those scholarships are gonna be any larger, they are already the max that those schools really offer. What I would be looking at is a chance at $ to MVP, with a 150k COA.

Whatcha think? Get those LSAT books back out?

No way will W&L COA be anything near 100K. You'd get close to a full ride and rural VA is not expensive.

what does GWU $ look like? GWU w/ $$$ for patent lit seems better than what you've presented thus far.

120k scholly still leaves 8 grand left per year for tuition. Plus living expenses. So maybe closer to 75k.
They have slightly worse BL placement than both temple and nova, but those 3 are all comparable to me.

Expecting 105k to 120k from GW. I considered applying there ED for the 150k merit. GW estimates living expenses at 27k, so probably 150k COA.

Edit: Vanderbilt had 56% BL+FC last year (14% of grads to my preferred region) vs. GW with 35% BL/FC

Still mulling over your situation, but shoot WUSTL an app immediately to use for negotiation.

Since you want biglaw, I would recommend the retake if you think you can get the 172. You would be looking at decent scholarships at the relatively low COL area schools of Michigan, UVA, and Duke. UVA seems like a good fit location wise
