Chemerinsky trying to take Berk to the top 5. I wonder if having him as the new dean would actually have that much of an impact :?:

Doesn't every dean want their school to crack T5? And no way, numbers are way too low and the school doesn't have the funding to buy top scorers.

Agreed. Berkeley has BY FAR the worst budget situation of any of the t13. If anything, they will continue dropping because the fiscal situation is so dire.

yeah I didn't think Berk would crack T5, what I meant to ask is if Chem being dean could at least bring them back up to their usual ~8 spot, but I guess the answer is prob not.

I think he can have a significant impact. 15% of the rankings is an assessment by lawyers and judges and 25% is peer assessment. I think having one of the most recognized legal scholars in the country as the dean of a law school can impact these two factors.

Berkeley job numbers have been not great for a while now, and their median lsat lags behind peers. There's no way installing a different Dean without fixing the financial situation changes that.

Everyone is assuming admission medians and job numbers matter to USNews or practicing lawyers. Chemerinsky is probably a big bump. I'll predict they are #10 next year and get to #8 the year after that.

Huh? Those things are quite literally in the formula for USNews. "Selectivity" (i.e. admissions medians) is 25% of the outcome, and "Placement" (i.e. jobs) is nearly as much. And I don't know what your "practicing lawyers" comment means in this context, especially considering you are not one.

In any event, Berkeley has gotten worse at placing "practicing lawyers" in recent years relative to peers, and the structural problems in the UC system are not going to help. In fact, they hurt considerably, as expenditures are a component of USNews score, and they're also crucial in attracting both students and faculty.

Haha! I was simply making light of the fact that the rankings might not actually be based on the formula they publish.

Is there reason to think this?

Berk will get back to 8-10 in the next yr or two bc of chem and the new admissions formula. Not that it means anything.

I kinda hunch the state of California will fall into the sea before Berkeley gets back to #8

Berkeley's budget problems have been horrible for nearly a decade and it's job numbers/admit stats have remained pretty stable for the past decade. Yet only last year, after Berkeley went through its public battle with its pervert dean did it fall in rankings due to a drop in peer rankings. Yet now it's condemned to not go back to where it's more or less rested (+/- 1 or 2)? Even though the perv dean that instigated the fall in reputational ranks has been replaced by chemerinsky? the fact that berkeley hovered at 8 despite its brutal budget issues and California having a tighter legal market should say something

I'd hammer them internally and never talk about them externally.

My friend just attended an NYU info session and they gave him a pamphlet that has their lsat numbers at 167/169/171 but the spreadsheet has it differently? Not sure if that's an error.

Did the pamphlet specify which entering class those stats were for?
