PhD+173, T14?

Post by Nanodds » Wed Jul 19, 2017 5:14 pm

Hi all, I will get my PhD from a top 20 US business school next year and think getting a JD from a T14

For HYS, I'm okay for an admission w/o scholarship at all
For the rest of T10, I expect to get at least half scholarship
For the remaining T14, I expect full scholarship

Am I realistic? Any recommendation for choosing target schools? Thanks for the help.

What was your undergraduate GPA?

UG GPA 3.5 (non US school)
Master GPA 3.90 (US school)

Ok, so only the undergraduate GPA matters.

Your PhD (in business...?) will help at the margins, but a 173/3.5 cannot expect a full scholarship at all of the lower T13. You're a relatively mild splitter for most of that group, so you can anticipate some decent money. Your actual scholarships are likely going to be unpredictable. I wouldn't count on getting in to HYS, especially not YS, but if you do, aid there is need-based.

Edit: This changes somewhat if your UG GPA is translated into an international GPA "ranking" from LSAC. If that's the case, things get much less predictable.

The way you're approaching these school tiers is a bit arbitrary regarding tuition discounts, but they're more or less reasonable. What do you want to do with a JD? If we're just talking going into law, that's one thing. If you're thinking law and business academic, that's quite another in how you approach this.

I will pursue an academic life in business for sure. For me, JD is 1) fun and 2) get an extra layer of logic training. :)

Oh dear. Please don't go to law school if you don't want to be a lawyer. It's going to be a huge waste of time and money.

This a million times over. Please don't do that to yourself.

You're not "PhD + 173"; you're "3.5 + 173."

Your PhD is a soft factor. And it's not necessarily a "plus" soft factor. One reason for that is that certain PhDs say things like they want to go to law school for "fun" and "logic training."
