When to Take the Money and Run?

Post by Stimpy » Tue Mar 21, 2017 12:28 pm

Please redirect if this question is already posted . . .

What are your thoughts on Full Ride (CLS/UCHI/etc) vs full sticker price (all paid with loans, no financial aid or parent involvement) at Yale?

Career Goal: Litigation (possibly PD, possibly private) with opportunities for public interest or academia later in life.

The academia wrinkle always makes it a harder question to answer. If you're really committed to some form of PI, my understanding of Yale's LRAP is that basically any job qualifies, so that can help offset the debt.

But it just depends on your goals. If you're seriously interested in academia, then Yale is probably worth the exorbitant price. If you're just interested in litigation and/or public defense work, take a full ride at CCN.

Tradition is made to be broken.
Ranking can change dramatically or mean much less 10-20 years down the road.

Given your stated goals I would absolutely take the money.

When would Yale be worth the money then?

For me, unicorn PI followed by a lengthy career in academia. Any other career goals can be met by CCN, and you won't be consumed by debt.

This is the most absurd question I've ever seen in the last 24 hours and absolutely anyone choosing Yale at sticker in this instance is either a 0L or a fucking idiot

I just wanna say I lol'ed.

I'd take the money. Look at the student loan thread to see the kind of six figure loans people are dealing with. That's not a lifestyle you want if you can help it.

So the argument is that money trumps all in this comparison?

I'm not sure the answer is black and white though. Few students seem to turn down Yale.
Very novel. Thank you for filling these fora with questions of first impression such as this.

there are more fulls given out at CCN each year than the number of students who turn own Y, so it is possible that 100% of them received fulls to one of CCN. Obviously its also possible none of them received fulls to one of CCN, but I feel like that is less likely.

Anecdotal of course, but there was a poster here who got into Yale but no $$ from any of the T14, so it can happen. I can see taking Yale under those circumstances.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but would you guys take Y in my case? Similar goals, debt at repayment is about $132,121. Next closest offer is Michigan with 150k Scholarship.

Yeah this is the situation where you take Yale over money at a lower T14.

You should consider moving this over to the "Choosing a Law School" forum.
