Don't think you can go wrong with "Dean"

Always Dean. It's a common convention to drop preceding adjectives from titles when addressing them, plus it's more respectful. For example: in academia, you would call assistant and associate professors "professor." In the military, you would call a 2nd lieutenant "lieutenant," a lieutenant colonel "colonel," a vice admiral "admiral." You only include the full designation in a like a heading, such as:

Paul Pless
Assistant Dean for Admissions
UIUC

etc.

Late response here, but a formal letter should be single-spaced (maybewith like .5 or 1 in the 'after' box of the Word alignment menu). The double-spaced only works for teachers to make edits, etc...

Leave a gap between paragraphs, and try to keep it to a one-page limit. So, like 4 - 5 short paragraphs. At least, that's how I was told to do it.

is it a bad idea to send a LOCI before hearing from the school at all... basically updating them on a new score, what I have been up to, and letting them know how badly you want to go there?

if this is acceptable, how would you address the LOCI - to whom it may concern?

I have the same question. I applied to 18 schools, most in late November, and haven't heard so much as a peep out of most of them.

Hello-

I'm working on a LOIC and I have a phrasing question. While I would be THRILLED to go to this school, it's a bit too early in the admissions cycle for me to be proclaiming that it is definitely my first choice, or include any sort of promise that I would attend.
Would a "I would be thrilled and honored to attend" suffice, or should I include something more along the lines of "this is my first choice and I will attend if offered admission". If I am offered admission after including the latter statement and then decline, is that a problem?

Thanks to all for the advice.

How should I address a LOCI if the wl letter was signed by two people, both holding the title 'director of admissions' ?

Dear Mr X and Mr Y?
Dear Directors of Admissions/Office of Admissions ?

I have addressed my letters to the Admissions Committee, such as "Dear Admissions Committee:" I doubt that any one dean is going to be the only person who is reading your LOCI, so I think it is more appropriate to address to the entire group. I don't want anyone to feel left out.

How important is it to head the letter with an address block? My LOCI is 1 page on the dot and just begins with "Dear Dean X" and ends with with name and LSAC number.

do you recommend only sending in LOCI's after you have been deferred/wait listed, or can I send one now while I'm waiting any results?

+1. I applied in October and have yet to get responses other then held for my top three schools. Would it be too much, in your opinion, to send LOCIs despite not getting a response?

Ken (and anyone else feel free to chime in):

A very competitive law school requested I submit a LOCI, addenda and/or additional (optional) LORs. I have three questions:

1. How many additional LORs are too many even if they are all top notch? I submitted 3 LORs with my initial application.

2. Given that timeliness and organization are crucial when submitting a LOCI and addenda at this stage in the admissions process, am I better off including the LORs with my LOCI/addenda and sending together or having them mailed separately as is typically the case?

3. I know the standard is to mail the LOCI ASAP without sacrificing quality but do you know if admissions offices typically wait a certain period after placing a HOLD status before re-opening the applicant's file?

Thanks for any advice and best of luck to everyone.
