There are generally two characteristics of help, and you only get to choose one:

Cheap or "good"/useful

As a believer of the "PS matters" doctrine, I'm all for getting the best possible help - no matter the cost. Yeah, it might cost a few hundred bucks but a solid essay will open more doors and $$ for you in the future.

+1. I personally believe my PS made up for my subpar LSAT score, at least when it came to scholarship money.

Definitely fine with a few hundred bucks....its the upper hundreds that I would deem unafforable

The professor who wrote my LOR also helped a lot with my statement. She was an English professor so...

You could ask a professor.

EDIT: you could try finding just an English tutor who has good credentials. Usually a writing tutor is less than $50 per hour. A good tutor will have been through graduate school and so will have some idea of what will make a good personal statement.

Find a Dean/Prof you really connect with if you can. I was in the honors college and the associate dean helped hundreds of students get into various top grad programs. She had a lot of experience with personal statements. It might not be the best, but it's cheap if you can find somebody similar willing to help.
