Re: UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) Class of 2011
I am excited to be back to Berkeley after four years dealing with its pain in the ass housing market. If anyone has specific questions on housing or anything else, feel free to get ahold of me and I will do my best to find some kernels of wisdom.

I put a hold on an apartment with my boyfriend this weekend. It's five to ten minutes walking distance to Boalt. Pretty expensive but ok since we are sharing. If NYU doesn't match, I'm accepting it next week.

5 to 10 minutes? Dammit you must walk fast. I'm about the same distance and it takes me 15-20. Unless you're talking about another place?

Oh no! I didn't walk it (only drove). I guess 15-20 minutes then.
I'm withdrawing from NYU today and giving my definite notice at Boalt. Yay!

If I have some time to go apartment hunting in June for an August lease, do folks who have experience with the housing market in Berkeley think I will problems?

I don't know Nate. Your best bet for finding a place in the Bay Area is through craigslist. In San Francisco it's pretty competitive, but I'm not sure about Berkeley. I'm assuming landlords prefer grad students over undergrads, which should work in your favor, but I'd say the earlier you can get out here the better. Also be prepared with a copy of your credit report in hand, all prior rental info so you can fill out an application on the spot, and written references if you have them.

Berkeley is officially known as "Berkeley Law" now, according to their website. I resisted the urge to get a hoodie when I was there because I heard rumor that this change would happen.

Re: UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) Class of 2011
hey folks,
just sent in my firm intention to enroll yesterday! i'm very excited about going to Boalt (tho less excited about being separated from my soon-to-be wife, who'll be off to Harvard Business School in the fall).
sorry if this question is jumping the gun, but does anyone know how long it generally takes before you can set up your Berkeley e-mail/register for Cal Rentals? I've been using Craistlist to scout housing in the meantime but, as some of you probably know, Craigslist can be rather hit or miss...
looking forward to seeing you all in the fall!

Hi, Mata! Nice to see you here and congrats! I sent in my firm "yes" yesterday and can't set up my email yet. The last thing I read said it takes about a week. I'm not sure about CalRentals. Maybe you can call the admissions office and see if they can speed things up/get you access?

Hi Mata,
I was able to register on CalMail about a 1 1/2 weeks after my firm enrollment. You sign up with Cal Rentals even before that if you request registration as an affliated student on their website and forward them your acceptance email.

Re: UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) Class of 2011
thanks for the responses! I figure with moving out of my current place and a wedding/honeymoon on the horizon in just a few weeks, it can't hurt to at least get started on things. I sent out a housing app for Manville/Ida a couple of weeks ago, but word on the street is that Manville is maybe a notch or two above pitching a tent under a tree in People's Park...don't know how much truth there is to that, though. Does anyone who submitted a housing app know when they're supposed to get back to us on that? If not, I'm happy to contact the housing office and report back.

I did too. It was the first time I was able to put my first and last name together on an email address without any numbers, abbrev., or other crazy symbols.

You can also set up aliases. I got my first initial + last name, first two initials + last name, and first + last name.yjlu wrote:raskolnikov wrote:I just set up my berkeley.edu email address! Woo!

I am going to be out of the country until August 16th and am pretty concerned about housing prospects. Any advice for me? I will be in the Bay Area for 4 days (May 10-14) but it's probably too early to look at that point.

Re: UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall) Class of 2011
Your best bet might be to secure a place at Manville by paying July or June rent (whichever they need to secure a place) before you leave. Otherwise, professionally managed apartments that you might find on rent.com are probably more agreeable to starting a lease almost 3 months from signing.mianbao wrote:I am going to be out of the country until August 16th and am pretty concerned about housing prospects. You know the mandatory orientation starts August 14th, right?mianbao wrote:I am going to be out of the country until August 16th and am pretty concerned about housing prospects. Any advice for me? I will be in the Bay Area for 4 days (May 10-14) but it's probably too early to look at that point.

Re: housing, I'd live in student housing for your first year and then find off-campus housing (if you want) next year. Finding something in a week would be difficult, unless maybe you can contact an apartment complex?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
