I'm officially going to BC. I'll be up there visiting this week for ASW. Anyone else decided on BC at this point or am I the only one?

Hey Kompressor,

Congrats to you and anyone else attending BC, it is an excellent law school. Great idea starting this thread, hopefully others will join in.

Best,

Ken

Thanks, Ken.

It is quite possible that I never would have gotten into Boston College without the institution of TLS. I cannot begin to tell you how much the people here have helped during the application process. It has been a long year, probably the longest of my life (figuratively, of course), and I am thankful that TLS has helped guide me through it. The service this website provides is invaluable.

I will do my best to stick around and help others where I can as others here have done for me.

So what was the deciding factor?

So what was the deciding factor?
Sibarg, it's difficult to put it into any one thing, but the biggest factor was location and portability. I'm absolutely positive that Boston is where I want to end up and BC is just a much better school for that than Emory. I posted this in another thread but, looking at the Ciolli study from earlier this decade (2001-2003), it seems that Emory really is a Southeastern school. The fact that Ciolli accounted for exactly zero people going from Emory into private firms in New England ended my internal debate. Yes, the stats are a bit dated, but the reputations of the schools haven't really changed much since 2003. Moreover, I saw stats from last year that indicated that ~1% of the class went from Emory to New England and it didn't state in what capacity. BC offers me a much better degree for the region I want to live in and offers me more portability overall, even though I don't think that will matter.

90k seems like a lot now and, don't get me wrong, it is. However, considering where I want to live I think a degree from BC would not only give me value over Emory because of the value I give to living in New England but in practical value as well. I firmly believe that the BC degree is significantly more likely to land me a top job in Boston/New England than an Emory degree. If it's, say, 20k difference then the 90k is made up for in 5 years. It may stall me from buying a house for a few years but, long term, I think BC will make me more money in the area. That's in addition to the whole being happier in Boston than Atlanta.
Komp did you also applied to BU?
Yes, and I was waitlisted. To be completely honest, though, I would have selected BC over BU unless BU offered me money. Their Biglaw stats are essentially the same (although BC may even have a slight edge), but I prefer BC's campus, location (I like being right outside the city), and sports. Plus, I went to a Jesuit high school and absolutely loved it and BC is a Jesuit college. Like I said, the schools are very similar in quality so it's just more of a personal preference for me.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any grant or scholarship. As a consolation, they did give me about 23k in low interest (about 5%) loans for the first year.

hey all,
I'm a current BC 1L (I was an active member of TLS back when I was applying). If any of you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. There are several TLS alums that started with me this year.

Look forward to meeting those of you who are attending the open house on Friday.

I'm on the fence between BC and WUSTL, barring any of my waitlists panning out.

And DC and probably the west coast. If you want to work in Chicago or the midwest pick WUSTL. Otherwise, it's hard to justify picking it over BC.

I'm torn between BU and BC.....going to force myself to decide within the next few days. I didn't get any scholarship $$$ from either though. Anyone have any input?

i would visit both of them if you have time so you can get a better feel for the campuses and profs and students (theyre pretty close together, making for an easy day trip). BC is known as the more collegial & community environment. depends what kind of atmosphere you want.

BU has the far better location. It is certainly right in the city (better spot than Suffolk that is in Downtown because it is in the financial district, which clears out @5) BC is across the street from a cementery (i dont know that just freaks me out) and you have to take shuttle to get places. It feels isolated.
BC has a more chill community feel. Plus, their facilities are great.
Check out the ASD to see which vibe suits you best.

It's a very hard decision.

The BC undergrad is across from the cemetery. The law school is not...it's surrounded by big a$$ houses that would motivate the money hungry law students every day on their way to class...
