No, the lamenting is because it's ill-advised to take on $200-300k of debt when you don't have to do it. If you would miss $200-300k from your bank account, then you need to reconsider your options.

Seriously though, sticker isn't a good or bad thing, it's just a thing. And your individual options aren't a good thing or a bad thing, but they're a thing. All of this will factor into your personal cost-benefit analysis. That's what you should care about. Depending on what you want in your profession and what your options are currently will affect whether "sticker is still bad?"

A family isn't the only thing that having that kind of unnecessary debt will prevent. It will limit the kind of home you can buy, the vehicle(s), the vacations etc. It will lengthen the number of years you have to work before retirement. If you have the ability to get a better score and get a scholarship then do it.

BTW - I have at least 3 friends (male and female) who were strong in their convictions not to have kids and they are now loving, doting parents. Things change.
