I feel like this is maybe best addressed in a diversity statement of some kind? It's not an uncommon thing to happen, so schools will hopefully be familiar with the general situation.
Also, you could check with the department of family services (or maybe a lawyer), in the state where the adoption took place. I know some states have a way to unseal adoption records to be able to verify native identity.
