Advice: I'm honestly not even sure. I guess, expect to spend a fair amount of time crafting your PS. Try a few different topics until you find one that feels right. Regarding schollies: I didn't do A LOT of negotiating, but I was able to get GWU to increase their scholly $. Also, originally, Michigan didn't offer me any merit-based aid and I don't qualify for need-based, but they scholarship match and once I got all of my scholarships from other schools, I shot them an email with some of my more compelling offers, as well as a blurb about how much I like the school and wanted to be able to attend etc. etc. and they actually ended up giving me MORE money than I was offered by a higher-ranked school (that's also a T10) so don't be discouraged just because you aren't offered money the first time around. Re: URM 2016-2017 Cycle Results
My cycle is pretty much over but I can be swayed by a few limbo schools. Will update if true. Stats are below.
Type of URM: Latina + AA
Attending: Northwestern ($)
GPA: 3.44 on transcript. Studied abroad so LSAC was 3.3X
LSAT: 152, 158, 162
Undergrad: HBCU
Softs: 1+ yrs paralegal at top law firm, awesome PS (I think), strong recommendations, good interview, strong application theme (everything about me speaks to international law).
Northwestern SPECIFICALLY has a Black Students Initiative program. Don't ignore that email. Reach out. It's a separate interview, but I'm fairly certain that's why I'm in.
Advice:
- DON'T BS THE PS. had I actually done it when I said I was going to I could've applied WAY earlier. I'm extremely happy with Northwestern, but I think if I applied earlier I would've gotten into way more schools and had negotiation options. Also, take everyone's PS advice with a grain of salt. It will never be perfect to them, make it perfect for you. I ended up implementing the changes I liked, and then CUTTING so much. The result was a very polished me.
- Take the LSAT seriously, don't waste a take testing the waters. Take as long as you need to study for it. I finished and still felt like I could learn a lot more, but I was fed up. As someone who was extremely lazy about academics and still got by, I think that was the hardest process of my life. Got me good. And I still could've done better had I buckled down more. But don't forget your hobbies while you're studying. You'll burn out if you don't indulge in yourself.
- Ask all of the questions. ALL of them. Ask your recommenders to start writing recs as early as possible because they will play around with you.
- Try to fill out the applications as early as possible. They're monotonous.
- If you didn't get a fee waiver and it's not T20ish, don't bother applying tbh. Unless you're killing to go there. But this stuff costs.
Approx. Time of Application: 2/1 for the 2/1 deadlines, 2/14 for everything else
Other acceptances: nada
Rejections: UVA, NYU, Berkeley, Harvard, Duke
Waitlists: Cornell, Penn, Emory, WUSTL, Georgetown (preferred), UCLA, Columbia (reserve), Chicago, Michigan
DEAD SILENCE: Vanderbilt,USC Gould, Fordham
Congratulations everyone
Update 4/18/17: UCLA waitlist. Reinforces that I really just needed to apply earlier lol.
4/19: reserved at Columbia lolol (seriously. Apply early)
4/20: Chicago waitlist
4/26: crown me waitlist queen.

To get in applying as late as you did to a T!3 and getting Cornell to wait-list you means your PS must have been extraordinarily strong. WUSTL & GT wl you isn't too surprising in my eyes, I've seen them grabbing higher LSATs from URMs. And if you would have ED at UVA, i'm sure you would have got in there too!!!!
Also concerning NU - why is this the first time I'm hearing about that Black Students Initiative?? I have received no emails since my acceptance from them about it, nor did i get any emails prior? strange

Type of URM: AA
Attending: TBD
GPA: 4.06
LSAT: 170
Undergrad: Canadian
Softs: K-JD, but worked full-time government job throughout undergrad
Advice: Assume you don't get a boost on the LSAT. I didn't know such a thing existed until I was told not to retake my LSAT and that I would be fine. Don't take the LSAT until you are ready. I put off the LSAT about 3 times, because I really didn't want to pay 200$ to retake the test. And, even after I took it, I was prepared to retake it.

Type of URM: AA female
Attending: USC $$$, unless I get off the Stanford waitlist in which case ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
GPA: 3.6
LSAT: 162
Undergrad: Massive state school
Softs: As good as you can get for K-JD
Advice: Apply early, get your LOR writers to start early, use your resources (profs who went to law school, friends, family to read your PS, etc),WRITE A DIVERSITY STATEMENT can't stress this one enough. I really think my DS made the difference between a WL and an acceptance. Biggest piece of advice is take some time before you apply to really assess where you have a realistic shot at. I wasted time and money applying to a bunch of safety schools I didn't really want to go to because I didn't critically assess my options. Be strategic about where you apply and why. Re: URM 2016-2017 Cycle Results
Type of URM: black
Attending: Yale
GPA: 3.8X
LSAT: 172
Undergrad: HBCU
Softs: MSc at a top uni, 3 years work experience,
Advice: Your first priority is the LSAT so give yourself at least 3 months and don't be afraid to retake even if you're happy with your score. A 1 point LSAT difference could make a big difference. Like thousands of dollars difference.
Since your GPA and undergrad are already baked into your application, your second priority will be your overall narrative. You're asking fancy schools to admit you and reject great people, many of whom will have better stats than you. You need an adcom to read your application and say I "I want this guy/lady to succeed" "I am invested in his/her story" "this is an impressive individual". You tell your story through your essays, all of them. Really really work on that PS. Get multiple people on this site to review it anonymously. That really helped me and I think that my PS was the difference in my app. I didn't write a DS since it was all in my PS, but if you're writing one of those make sure it adds to your overall narrative. Your 'why xx' (and write these) should still be building your story, showing how that school can help you complete your story, make them want to help. I wrote a Yale 250 and used that to build my overall narrative too. I saw that my essays were too biographical so I wrote 250 words on something different and put personality and humor into it. Remember they're reading everything at once, and at the end they should have a well rounded, positive portrayal of you and they should be rooting for you. Don't press send until you read it and impress yourself.

Re: URM 2016-2017 Cycle Results
Type of URM: AA male (Canada)
Attending: HLS, definitely the harest decision I've had to make in my life. I was also accepted into HBS so i'll be doing the JD/MBA Program at Harvard. Had I not been admitted to HBS, I would have gone to YLS. For logistical purposes I thought it would be more practical to attend HLS as opposed to doing the Yale JD and Harvard HBS (although many people do it).
GPA: 4.1X
LSAT: 176
Undergrad: University of Toronto
Advice: Take the LSAT extremely seriously as it will likely determine which school you'll end up at. Don't rush it, take it when you're good and ready. Spent lots of time on your PS and DS statements, use it to creative a coherent and convincing narrative as to why you want to go to law school and or how the student body could benefit from your presence.
Softs: Various academic awards, in the process of completing my M.Phil at the University of Cambridge.
Approx. Time of Application: Late Sept/Early October
Other acceptances: Yale($$), Stanford($$), CLS ($$$), NYU ($$$) and Chicago ($$).
Rejections: None.
Waitlists: None.

Re: URM 2016-2017 Cycle Results
LOL thank you! I agree, I got incredibly lucky! I made my personal statement was so organically me I was like hell if they don't take me they don't deserve me. Here we are. UVA... I never really wanted to go there, they were a negotiation application. Virginia...*shudders*Hi-So - ArshavinFan wrote:
You might have Cycle of the year in my honest opinion.
I have received no emails since my acceptance from them about it, nor did i get any emails prior? strange
The NU black students initiative email came in an email that was similar to the BLSA emails from other schools. It should've come in the wave of fee waiver emails. VERY easy to miss if you didn't read it all the way through. NU was one of the first schools to hit me up so I obsessed over it a little bit, sent them an inquiry and BOOM. Interview. Apparently the initiative has downsized in recent years (they had a separate weekend), but is still good!

Re: URM 2016-2017 Cycle Results
Type of URM: AA, LGBT, Male
Attending: Harvard
GPA: 3.5
LSAT: 160
Undergrad: Top 5
Softs: I’ve had some significant internships and done fairly interesting independent research, but nothing extraordinary. I’m 1 year out of undergrad and do not have a particularly unique job.
Advice: Of course, aim as high as you can with your grades and LSAT score. But do not count yourself out if your numbers are below average. That being said, it is imperative that you do your research on every other component of the application. Think seriously about your personal statement, your resume, who will write your recommendations, etc. Do not compose an application with a hodgepodge of things you think will look good. Find the thread that stitches your application, the paper version of yourself, together. I know this all sounds very abstract, but there is so much to be said about this process that I can’t do it justice in this one post. It’s not impossible to learn if you make the effort, though. Utilize these forums, books, blogs by admissions officers, people who are at the schools you want to attend, and whatever else it takes. As I hope my experience demonstrates, it will be worth it.
I don’t know how active I'll be going forward, but feel free to PM me with questions.
Approx. Time of Applications: Sent mid-January for Harvard and Stanford and the day of the deadline for Yale
Acceptances: Harvard
Rejections: Yale
Waitlists: Stanford
Attending: Harvard
GPA: 3.5
LSAT: 160
Undergrad: Top 5

Wowowowow.
Did you apply anywhere else? What else do you credit your success to? Can you talk more about your personal statement.
Please do some more justice pretty pls. Shed more insight. Help us learn.

Don't think you can say each $ is worth about one year's worth of tuition. Cause if you only got 30k total, that is still $ but not quite one year's worth. Prolly, $ is under half tuition, $$ is half to slightly more than half, $$$ is full or near full, and $$$$, is full + stip. I dunno, that is just my assumption.dietcoke1 wrote:did we ever establish the $$$ symbols? each ($) is about one year's worth of tuition?

Re: URM 2016-2017 Cycle Results
Well tuition naturally affects the COA. Also, apart from a few schools that also provide stipends, like Chicago and Michigan, schools usually only give $ for tuition, so I naturally assumed we were talking bout tuition.brinicolec wrote:Are we talking tuition or CoA?TAD wrote:Don't think you can say each $ is worth about one year's worth of tuition. Type of URM: American Indian (formally known as Native American)
GPA: Mid 3.X
LSAT: 16X - one take
Advice: Apply by Christmas. Manage your social media/anonymous law school forum posts as a marketing executive would when promoting a brand. Write your package targeting your top choice schools, it hurt me with some institutions, but I was accepted at all 3 of my top choices. Be attractive and charismatic. Do you.
Acceptances: Harvard ($$$$), Columbia ($$$), Michigan ($$$$+), Northwestern ($$$), Berkeley ($$), UCLA ($$$), Notre Dame ($$$$+)
Rejections: NYU, Penn, UVA, Duke
Waitlists: UChi, Cornell, Georgetown
Withdrew before decision: Stanford
