re: poll

brokeback mountain was actually pretty revelatory in my coming out experience.

i didn't see it until 2012, by which time i was already 20, and only just starting to realize i wasn't totally straight.

i felt surprisingly validated by it

This makes my heart warm. This is why representation matters.

i've grown up my whole life in the city
i was late to the concept of questioning my sexuality
there's no reason two fictional gay cowboys in wyoming in the 60's should have evoked any sort of response, but it did. i thought about that movie every day for weeks after i saw it.

idk that movie was just powerful - jake gyllenhaal is one of my favorite actors now

makes my heart warm too. I think something about them being tough cowboys made it especially powerful because it's the exact opposite setting that Hollywood normally puts gay characters in.

Anyone going to UCI with me? (Or praying to get off the Michigan WL?)
UCI has a great LGBT community. If you end up going there, I think you'll have a good time.
Thanks! Any social resources you can suggest beside Outlaw? I am certainly going to be working with them, too, but worth an ask. If you have any other advice for a nontrad LGBT vet at UCI, do please PM me.

I agree. I saw it pretty late too, about 1-2 years after I came out. But media representation was huge in my coming out experience — especially on TV. So, so important.

The Lavender Bar in OC is extremely active and works very closely with OutLaw (here's their website: http://www.oclba.org). They put together tons of events for students. It is a great resource.

I'll PM you as well.
