Tuition increase

Post by srg1027 » Mon Apr 22, 2019 3:59 pm

I am torn between two schools that are both offering me 75%+ of their full tuition for Fall 2019 entry, however one thing I am afraid of is tuition increase over the next 3 years. I am worried that my scholarships that look good now will soon not look as good at all. Is there anything I could email to the schools regarding this or anywhere I can see past tuition prices to judge the trajectory. Also, are there scholarship bumps? Thank you!

Which schools are you talking about, and what's your total estimated COA?

Tuition will likely get bumped up over the next few years, but not so much that it would make much of a difference (i.e. no more than $2-3k). What should make a difference is the total amount of debt you'll be taking on to attend and the likely job prospects at each school, because that will determine how easy it will be to pay that debt off.

Under the "Finances" section of LST, there is a chart showing past trajectory for increases in tuition.

Cardozo- $45K per year with no conditions
Brooklyn- $53K per year, top 80%

Cardozo seems like the play here (assuming no Lsat retake and yada yada), due to lack of stipulation and what I believe are marginally better employment outcomes (at least I think they have a better rep in the industry).

Yeah, assuming you don't want biglaw, Cardozo is the better choice.

That said, it's still not a great choice, because you're looking at well over $100k in debt, even with your scholarship. That's not easy to pay off on the likely salary for most Cardozo grads. And that's why I initially said that tuition increases aren't worth worrying about, because they will account for a very small fraction of your overall debt at graduation.
