i bought a $1300 vaio last year and its great, but..

just bought a $300 netbook (acer aspire one) and it is AWESOME for note taking and websurfing

now the vaio stays at home as a desktop replacement and i tote the superlight netbook around with me

hows the keyboard size?

keyboard size is standard. home and end require a function key which can be annoying, but otherwise it's standard

Yea, try to convince someone who can't spell laptop to get an SSD.

The thing with an SSD is if it crashes there is no data recovery posible like a HD. I have two laptops with SSDs and I love the speed, but I back them up daily becuase if they crash everything is gone forever.

dropping a ssd laptop is supposed to be less worse than dropping a standard hd laptop, yes? which could be a factor

how big is your ssd, though? like 16 gb at best? kind of doesn't compare to 160gb

Or you could just not drop your laptop.

Probably true though.
I think actually a bigger risk would be accidentally leaving your laptop on when you put it in your bag, and risking hard drive failure. It has happened to me a few times that I went to Hibernate (in XP) and closed the laptop before it fully hibernated, then open it back up after carrying it in my bag, only to find that there was an error, it didn't hibernate, and was on the whole time.

yea, you should backup anyway. External Hard Drive + DropBox (or other cloud backup) = a good solution

I was looking at the T400 but ultimately settled on a Dell Studio 14.

2.2ghz core 2 duo T6600
4 gigs RAM
14.0 inch LED screen 8)
backlit keyboard
facial recognition software
free-fall protection
wireless N/G/B
320gig HD
14.0 inch screen
only 4.5lbs
all for $480 in an open box deal.

I had an HP touchscreen laptop before this, boy was that thing a piece of junk. I'll never buy an HP laptop again.

Both are 128 GB SSDs, other problem with SSD is just like ram you can only re-write so many times, so I just plan on them failing by 5 years. Which is fine since I average a new compter ever year. Love the speed, but you need to know the SSD limits.

Just FYI: when SSDs hit the rewrite limit, they don't lose your data. Sectors will hit the limit one at a time, not the whole drive. Also, I've heard the latest SSDs have gotten to the point where you would essentially have to be constantly erasing and rewriting all your data for several years before the limit is hit.

I like to take notes using pen and paper... is there a reason why I should change my habits when I go to school?

u gonna do your exams the same way?

I don't know how law school exams work.

Are they timed, and involve writing up many pages worth of information to answer the questions? I am a very quick typist but when I take notes I use a lot of short hand and personal symbols and notations that help me learn better. That sort of thing gets really complicated with word processing programs. Could I just take my exam at one of the school's computers?

I just really don't want to buy a lap top unless there is a compelling reason to do so.

A lot of the answers you're looking for really depend on the school.

90% of my class uses their laptop to take notes, but some don't and they get by ok. However, there are things you WILL need a laptop for. I have not met a single person that doesn't have a laptop for law school. Basically, if you don't get a laptop, you are going to have many difficulties. Lots of material is posted online, you will need to access WestLaw and Lexis numerous times per day.

Honestly, not getting a laptop will be a horrible decision. So I hope you will reconsider!

I don't even know anyone who went through UG without a laptop.

Computers I have used in law school and my thoughts on them:

Dell XPS M1710 – 17 inch monster gaming computer. Loved the big screen, the huge keybord, the assume battery life. Hated the weight, killed my back with all my books in a backpack. HUGE power transformer that would dim the lights in the classroom when I pluged it in. Best feature: LED lights I could set to red and blinking to screw with the epelictics in the classroom.

Dell Insperion – 15 inch, workhourse, nothing fancy. Good combination between size and screen/keyboard. Decent no frills computer that my school had all of us buy. Cons is it looked just like everyone elses and if you put it down you could not tell whose was whose without turning it on.

Dell Studio XPS 13 – loved the weight, keyboard was fine, screen size was fine, battery life fine with nine cell, SSD is fast as hell, processor takes everything you through at it. Perfect size/weight for me. Con is I found I needed and external monitor (27 inch), keyboard and mouse at home as writing all the time on that tiny keyboard was a pian. So with a docking station this is my primary lawptop and I love it to death. One con: it gets HOT. Use a chill pad to cool it down.

Dell Adamo – WTF was I thinking? Cool looking as all hell. Very slim and light. Same size keyboard as the XPS 13, great screen. Overpriced and underpowered though. Built in video makes screen resulation on the 27 inch moniter look like crap. Pretty, but useless. Relgiated to my secondary take to coffe shops and stuff computer and leave the XPS docked 100% time now. Don’t buy this thing unless you got money to burn.

13 inch MacBook Pro – love it, looks cool, boots up fast, never crashed. Cons first Mac and I am an Miscrosft junkie. Pretty much just use it for playing around with.

are you a 9L? why so many?

4 computers in 3 years isnt *that* rediculous... i usually have a laptop and a desktop at all times, and have replaced both in the last year.

id love to meet a 9L someday tho...

Except that its actually 5 computers he listed. Four of which are "premium" laptops. The XPSs were dell's premiere offering until they released the Adamo, which is, what, $2,000? This seems to be a list of very expensive laptops. I really hope this guys living on a stipend, because I bet the above laptops are $6,000+.

The Adamo when I got it was just over 3k, but they went donw since then, and Dell was nice anouth to send me a $250 gift card since I "overpaid". I went to law school at night, so I had a day job to pay for my toys
